Good news on mine -- the tie rods were completely corroded and couldn't be moved. The dealership replaced them for free and completed the recall service. I did get charged $70 for the full alignment, but as I said -- it was expected.

When you get the headgasket replaced, make sure you have them replace the timing belt, drive belts and water pump. They should only charge you for the parts. they should all need tobe replaced by now if not already done.
Oh yah, welcome to Yotatech.

TC -- you're correct -- it was Right Toyota in Scottsdale, AZ. Service manager Joe Weisgerber. They also gave me a print out of the alignment. These guys were easy to work with and really took care of the problem with no fuss. Props to Right Toyota.

Just got the recall done at Centennial Toyota in Las Vegas, no problems, they did the recall and full alignment without doing any extras, although they did want me to do more, like the brakes, tie rod ends, but that is expected.

Got mine back today, no extra charges although they did recommend I replace the lower ball joints, idler arms, and sleeves for $770.

I got home a bit ago from picking up my truck from the dealer and this is how it all went, all in all pretty good IMO. I was supposed to get a loaner car but they didn't have any in at the time due to the fact that they give them to warranty work customers first then first come first serve for other work being done, oh well they drove me to my doorstep and offered to pick me up. Anyways it was supposed to be done at 4 and when I hadn't got a call at 4:15 I called them (yes I'm impatient) they said it would be done in about 10 minutes as they were just finishing washing it. So when I went down to pick it up they talked me through everything they had done and gave me my paperwork and the print out from the alignment machine. When I went out to my truck I took a look around at the front end components checking boots, grease, cotter pins etc. and find that they had replaced all the cotter pins (even the ones on nuts they didn't touch because I'd used wrong length ones) and regreased all my boots, joints etc. The best part though is when I read through the alignment sheet, they had done a full alignment front and rear including centreing my front tires in the wheel well (didn't know they could do that) and adjusted camber castor toe and something else. In the rear they recentred my axle ( to the best of their ability) and straightened out the slight cock it had to it, then get this they adjusted my pinion angle with shims because it wasn't within factory spec! Wow this was alot better service then I expected, hell they didn't even try to sell me anything other then offer an oil change for no labour and ask if there was anything else I needed when I left. So I must say that Wilson Toyota up here in Bellingham WA is a pretty good place in my book.

hey guys, i got the little service recall booklet in the mail and will be callin up soon to make my appointment. my question is that i just orderd a front end rebuild kit for my 4runner and got it in today. it includes upper and lower ball joints, idler arm, pitman arm, and outter and inner tie rod ends and sleeves. should i install this stuff, THEN take it to the dealer to get the relay rod done or should i wait till after it is done to put my new stuff on? Is there any way i could get Toyota to put all my stuff on for free since they have to take most of it off anyway to replace the steering rod? thanks guys.

Replace or not to replace ?
I would do it first because they are NOT going to do it for free. The recall is only for the center link that Toyota calls a relay rod. None of the other parts will be taken off to replace the rod. So do all your work first and then let the replace the center link and do an alignment. They may charge you for an alignment after all the other parts have been replaced also so you might not get it for free either. But that still wouldn't be a bad thing as you would have a completely new front end. Thats my .02 cents

yep replace it first, thats what I just did. That way the alignment they give you is good to go for a good amount of time rather then them align it then you tear it all apart and have it be off again. No they won't do it for free, I asked and as you can read my dealer is apparently alot nicer then others.
And to everyone else yes it is pretty nice to have a friendly dealer I can count on even if my truck has only been there twice (Brakes when it was first bought, now relay rod). I guess it might be true that they are the #1 Toyota dealer in North America for customer satisfaction (at least thats what the "official" Toyota bulletin says thats plastered all over the service, parts and showroom) Hopefully everyone else gets their situation rectified, I can't believe how some of these other dealers are treating all of you.

Isn't it funny that almost every Toyota dealership you go to has the #1 in Customer Satisfaction plaques posted throughout the showroom floor and in the service dept, I have yet to visit a dealer that didn't have one, go figure huh, lol. Glad to hear of a good experience. I still have to get mine done.

I went to bring my 90 pickup in for an alignment after i had changed the idler arm. When the service manager called me to tell me my truck was finished he told me that their was a recall on the relay rod so they went ahead and did that and that i wouldn't be charged for the labor on the front end or the alignment. FREE TRIP. Great service,
