Toyota announced Tuesday that it will issue a voluntary "Special Service Campaign" in co-operation with NHTSA. The campaign involves certain power-steering equipped 1989-1996 4Runner SUVs, compact pick-ups and T-100 pick-ups (see update/edit below)

In these vehicles, a crack can develop in the steering relay rod if the steering wheel is turned repeatedly under conditions requiring extreme force, such as when the vehicle is stopped. In the worst possible case, the company said, the rod may fracture causing a loss of steering control.

Owners of these vehicles will be notified by mail, Toyota said, beginning in mid-September. Customers with questions are directed to contact Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331.

EDIT:

I called 800-331-4331 and got the years clarified. They are:

89 - 95 Toyota trucks with 4WD and power steering

90 - 95 Toyota 4Runners

93 - 98 Toyota T100 trucks

I got through to a phone rep who said that it's best to call in with your VIN because not all of the vehicles within those model/year ranges (above) will be covered. He said that it depends on where and when the vehicle was manufactured.

Bob
this is easy to do. i just called them with my vin# and they gave me all the recalls ever done on my veh, it only took like 2 min on the phone with the # above. its worth the phone call

got 'er done

Hey all,
Had my relay rod replaced this week at San Diego Toyota in ..San Diego. Finished it in a day, no hassle about needed or unneeded repairs or any grief about the recall (although they did sorta scratch the heck out of my tie rods, but no biggee I guess). Actually I was a little disappointed they didn't call- I need the valve cover gaskets replaced and my rear differential fluid is leaking- I would've let 'em fix those! Oh well-- anyway it was a pleasant enough experience- seems like they've gotten it all worked out since the recall first came out.
Big Huge Thanks to the Yotatech community for educating me on this recall- I went in knowing to ask for the alignment specs, and would've balked at the idea of paying for new tie rods, etc.
You guys are awesome!
And Toyota is freakin' awesome for replacing a 19 year old part!

Dealer replaced mine in summer of 2006 when I had the head gasket replaced. Did an alignment as well. No complaints, the repaired head gasket, water pump & timing chain was about 300 cheaper than a quote from a reputable local shop in town.

If I ever have a question on my truck the dealer here has been a wealth of information. As for the recall, they did the repair automatically while my rig was there for other service, I am assuming they ran the VIN automatically, kinda cool.

It's neat to get your truck back from the shop knowing they fixed more than you asked for free...

Darn, I was hoping to get some free stuff. I just called Yota about my 91 truck and they checked my VIN. It appears this upgrade was done in 2006, and there was nothing else showing to be done with it.

Just call your dealership with the VIN and ask if the 50N recall has been done.

Who told you that lie? We have guys in this thread that got their recall done in 2009.

The recall doesn't have an end date.

Being that it didn't come out until late 2005 and most people didn't get their cards until early 2006, I find this hard (actually, impossible) to believe.

uhhh... I believe that's a solid negative. You may have the steering recall confused with the 3vze head gasket recall...

Jim Norton Toyota Tulsa, Ok
It took 1.5 hrs and they tried to get me to buy other parts but didn't push it. Overall a good experience.

Just had my 94 done yesterday at Boulder Toyota Scion. They did a full alignment also. Suggested I replace the idler arm but i said i woudl probably hold off and he didn't push it at all. That place seems pretty good, they had quite an operation there, with about 20 bays going at once.
