Does a lift void the recall? Bought my truck in July without the recall being done. It has a 2" lift in the front and rear.

Also, my parking brake cable is broken. Could they still do the job with the parking brake inoperable? Leave it in gear, maybe?

I don't think the lift voids it so long as the relay rod is still stock

If it's the same recall that I went through last summer, you'd get a notice in the mail.
You get tracked and notified according to the vehicles VIN number and the registration. I gotta a recall notice in the mail last summer and took it to the dealership right away.
They replaced the steering relay rod. No charges and catered to me w/ coffee and donuts and even shuttled me to and from my home when the 4runner went in and it came time to go pick it up. Schweeetness!
If this is the same recall y'all are discussing. It's very old news.

Not sure if a lifted rig would void the recall, but if I were to guess. I would say the recall would be voided due to over working the part to be replaced. Just my guess.

Anyone have any idea why my VIN isn't covered by the recall?

Yes SSC# 50N steering relay rod for "certain" 2WD and 4WD 4 Runners 90-95. I just had mine replaced last week (20Jan09). The dealer asked for my VIN and recall notice number "SSC# 50N". I didn't have my original notice.... long since lost.... but I periodically get safety recall follow-up notices so I used the info from that. Which was just the recall number.

Hope this helps

Toyota has ben quite diligent in reminding me to have my steering relay rod replaced. I will get it done as soon as I replace my head gaskets :(
By searching on my VIN, the dealer was able to verify that the relay rod had not yet been replaced (by any Toyota dealer) and that the head gaskets had been indeed been replaced in 1998.
Had the head gaskets not been replaced, they would have replaced those as well, even though the campaign was only good for 8 yrs or 100,000 mi.

Here's a link to the notice I've received:

I got my notice about two weeks ago.
I work at a dealer and The tech is hookin me up! the recal plus tie rod assemblys, idler arm and alignment. The front of my truck is almost brand new now after the brake system nightmare and this stuff.
If only I had BJS before the alignment I would be in great shape.
Anybody got some for a good price??

well i got my campaign service done, and it looks like they replaced the center link and the right inner and outer tierod and adjuster sleeve. got a free alignment and car wash in.

however i took a look at it today and the retards put my steering stabilizer in on the wrong side of the center link and its rubbin on my oil pan! im furious, im goin back today to rip them a new one!

heres pics, you cant see where its rubbing but you can see its on the wrong side

What kind of bracket lift do you have that uses a stock relay rod? That's bad juju for your tie rods ...

its a super lift, the knuckles raise up to keep your steering geometry the same as stock. thought it was a great idea. strong too, havent had a tie rod go out yet.

The NBC stations are running a story on a family who did not get the recall and lost their son when it snapped.

Are you a lawyer for the family or something? Or perhaps looking for ammo for a lawsuit of your own? Your 3 posts here on YT seem to be against Toyota for this recall.

Care to elaborate?

Especially seeing as how the name is "Relay Rod"

Should I be able to order these on my own from a dealer and install them myself? I don't think i'll do this (i dont trust myself with a safety issue like this) but I'm just curious. Do you have to be an authorized mechanic?

Your truck would only be warrantied if the dealer installs the part. You can purchase them from toyota nd do it yourself, but why bother when the recall is free.

I wouldnt do it myself. I'd like to, but I can't. I'd like to do it myself because 1) it gives me something to do, and 2) it gives me something to learn with. But again, if I'm going to learn, i don't want to sacrifice safety. I'd rather have toyota do the work. The dealership around here seems pretty good and honest.

It's pretty easy to install yourself, but since it's free, why not have the pros do it?

I had mine fixed like 3 years ago when the recall came out, they fixed it for free, no questions asked and the gave me an alignment. Secondly the news called it a recall, it was not it was a service announcement, so the dealerships say. They told me most recalls are for new cars, and all other manufactures would not fix a 20 year recall. But Toyota does because they are the best and they bow how they need to take care of there customers. There you go that is my two cents.
