Some Transmission Questions

My transmission has been whining in 3rd and 5th. It started doing it about a thousand miles ago. It's got 173k on it now.

I think I'm going to replace it with a used one.

Questions:

1. Any idea of how much time I have or what happens in this situation when it runs out?

2. My truck is a 1990, so it has a W56-C. What years make for a compatible swap?

3. Are there any good write-ups of this job? I've got a haynes manual but I could use a good write-up. Is it a difficult swap to do? Common gotchas that might be overlooked in the manual? Tips and/or tricks?

Before you get into that, when was the last time the gear oil was drained and replaced?

I did it when I changed all the fluids when I bought the truck in the spring. Then I did it again a month or so ago to see if redline mt-90 was worth the hype. I'm pretty sure it's good on oil.

Okies. I was only asking.

I'm not sure about which transmissions will be drop in compatible but I'm sure someone will jump in and help with that information.
