So, I called the dealer...

(Edit: thanks mods for moving this thread!)

...about some parts for my 4runner that I'm about to get on the road. I intially called about a dizzy cap o-ring (which they wanted over $8 for) so just for the heck of it and to do some comparison shopping I asked them about the prices for some other parts that I will eventually pick up.

me: (after informing him I have a 22RE) How much for a set of spark plug wires?

him: Hmm...*typing sounds*

him: $113.

me: So that was $113 for those wires?

him: Yep.

me: Okay, thanks

Rock Auto has Denso (non OEM but quality) wires for less than $15. I have my doubts about him giving me the right figure for those, although I'm sure they would have been more than happy charging me $113 if I wanted them! On the other hand, it would not surprise me at all if the dealer was legit charging that much. Scary!

Anyway, if any of you needed a laugh today I hope I helped

Here's a link to the $14.59 Denso plugs - (scroll 2/3rd down)

Denso does not make the OEM wires...Just saying.

So your comparing apples to oranges here.

And who pays full retail for OEM parts anymore?

It is not uncommon for dealers to charge 2X the price of OEM.

BTW, I believe OEM wires for 22R-E were made by Sumitomo, not Denso, altho I would use Denso or NGK on mine anytime.

No use splitting hairs over wires...

Good wires are good wires...

IM surprised you just didn't order a whole motor from Toyota when you did yours! I think you are sitting on a bunch of Toyota stock or something.

If you want OEM wires, they're only $80 at 22reperformance

And now I'm kicking myself for not realizing he has distributor o-ring sets, too, for about half of what I paid at my local dealer.

Red face

I have not wires for any 22Rec engines for a while but I don`t think I paid much more then $40.00 to $50.00 a set I could go and look at the invoices.

I think I have at least one set still on the 22REC parts shelf.

I just had better luck with the Toyota wires on the 22rec engines.

What is wrong with owning Toyota Stock??

I paid $120 for a set of OEM wires a few years ago for me 4Runner. I kept having aftermarket wires fall apart on Mr while driving after being used for less than a month.

I used a set of NGKs on my '98 5VZ - they are working great so far and the old ones were starting to miss so it was time.

My brother in law and I checked yesterday as we were working on the '90 22re - the wires had a date code of 1989! 25 years ago! 243k! Do all these wires say '1989' on them or is that the legit date? Worse than that...I have receipts from the PO from a Toyota Dealership that state that part of the service they did back in Jan of 2014 before I bought it was to change the plugs and wires. The wires were obviously ancient.

Hmm...I think I'll be changing wires soon!

Granted the OE plug wired do come with all the replacement looms which is cool if you want to replace yours considering most have disintegrated by now. However I work at a dealership and have the silicone ngk wires on mine. Can't remember how much I gave for those but I got them from advance.
I also X2 on getting OE sensors and all electronics!

I work for a dealer and for most things, I don't even bother even getting them priced out. But everyone so far is right. If it's something vital, such as sensors, I get it through work.

Plus, most parts guys (including tweedle dee and tweedle dumb at my shop) couldn't tell their butt from a hole in the ground. Unless it's something they deal with every day like belts and brake pads, you literally have to spell it out and lead them by the hand to figure it out. I might as well be looking stuff up myself as far as parts go, but it's nice to have someone else to blame when I don't get the right parts to fix the car lol

Before you dump too much on "parts guys," spend some time on a site like toyotapartsoverstock.com See how easy it is to find the part you want -- and you KNOW your way around your own vehicle! Now imagine you're standing behind the counter and some fine citizen wants "that black wiggly thing, you know, ..." And he's asking about a vehicle that was sold 20 years ago.

So make it easy on everyone. Find the part in advance, and print out the drawing. Write down what you think the part number is -- but the number could have changed. And write down your VIN; there are subtleties on what part you need, and the VIN answers those questions instantly. The Parts guy will actually be glad to see you coming.

Lol my parts guys have the VIN number in front of them on the repair order, and half the time, they still don't get it right. That's the only downfall I really have with my dealership. Our service department is one of the highest rated in the region. One of the areas we constantly have problems with is on time delivery. We are constantly calling people back and telling them things like, "sorry, we didn't get one of the parts we ordered. It will be here on the next shipment.", when in reality, it was, oh crap, I didn't know you needed that part too. That's why I'm constantly over their shoulde, pointing at the screen, telling them I need one of those. We honestly shouldn't have to do that with parts guys who have 15+ years in the industry.
