Smog issue

Ok i will try and explain this as best as I can.

2 years a go I illegally smogged my truck because I just had to get it on the road for my small business. It is not passing smog. NOX is to high I have a friend that is an MBZ tech he is helping me thru this. Well it has been 2 years and I have some money and I would like to fix it the right way. He did some tests and some (i mean SOMEEEE) trouble shooting. We did take off the EGR valve (off of the pelenum) and it was clogged we cleaned it out and it still failed. next what he did is some test to test to see if the port coming from the exhaust was pumping out exhaust. It was not. Well we have just pulled off the head to the truck and had inspected the route from the exhaust thru the back of the head and to the intake and that was not clogged....From here we are not sure where to go...well we do now that we broke the timing cover plate taking the head off not knowing there was a bolt in the front, it sounds like we are retards (which we are) but we did not force anything and the cover broke like a flimsy craker.....DAMN IT....

To add to my friends diagnosis he has dealt with lots of vaccum systems on old chevys and is really good with following diagrams and has tools to test the vaccum system. Which he did extensivly even before and after we unclogged the EGR. I do remember that after cleaning the EGR out and applying vaccum to the EGR with his vaccum tool there was still no exhaust flowing thru the EGR valve.

Any help here would be appreciated...

smog

My 84 4runner wouldnt pass smog and it had a little over the limit of nox.
my dad and i worked on it and we found the valve for the AC that opens and closes for the exhaust and that was broken so i rigged it so it would work only for the exhaust and it helped with the oxygen levels and i put a new cat on it and if that dont work use a cheetahcat which is 2 cats welded back to back.

Isn't that the answer? If you don't have a connection from the exhaust to the EGR valve, you're never going to get NOx down far enough to pass (and no, changing your catalytic converter won't help.)

Don't forget to print out the manual pages for your friend.

@scope103

I am just curious where you got that there was no connection from the exhaust to the EGR?
