I am getting lots of dents on the powdercoated sliders (the one in this pic comes from people smashing their doors on it, makes me feel very happy when this happens) and rust is starting to grow. I was wondering what the best recommendations are for how I should handle the rust situation before it gets worse. I get the feeling I should scrape all the rust off, prime and paint again, but I could use a little professional advice on what tools and chemicals work best. PS does it matter if I paint over powdercoat a bit? pls. tell me what I should use for scraping, priming/painting, thanks guys

Thats not that much rust, you dont have to worry about it causing any structual problems..

Im not to sure how powdercoating likes paint though..

I usually sand my tube work down once a year and give it 3 fresh coats of tremclad/rustolum gloss black rust paint

I would suggest you hit it with some steel wool or something of the sort, then scuff up the powder coat and hit it with a layer or two of paint.
Paint shouldnt harm the powder coat at all.

Thanks guys, sounds like an easy job. I'll grab the steel wool like you suggest peow and hit it with some paint! What grain steel wool would be best (or does it even matter)? Also no need for primer? Just scrape+paint? thanks also to you jay!

Hit it with rust converter if you want it never to rust through the paint again... but they're sliders, most likely they will get scratched again and again.

and surface rust will take 100 years to wear a hole in the steel....

powder coat is happy with a double coating of regular paint...(scuff it slightly)
i wire wheel can remove all surface rust efficiently. *that and a drill or a 4" grinder"

wire wheel, or grind the rust away,
wipe w/clothe (remove dust)
paint, or use the ultimate rust stopper from WESTCO
(stuff similar to this, main page here )

basically this stuff.[...(i bought the smallest can, and used a que tip to apply all over my old rig...a little bit goes a long way)
1 thing of warning w/this stuff...

or paint is good too... so is hair spray for temporary..really anything to coat it with (less salt) will be a waterproof coating...

i smile, that you wrote someone actually dented their own doors on your sliders.. that is precisely why i even bought my yota rig...(bad parking @ work)...and i wanted to save my bmw from a-rods that don't have the same mentality of keeping a machine in pristine order

... wire wheel or use one of those plastic mesh style grinding wheels.. god i dont remember the name of em.. nylon something? Work great for removing paint/rust/smothing metal..

and can of matching spray paint, who cares its a slider? Its meant to get knicked up

I use regular old sandpaper Sand the rust down till its smooth (or gone), rough up the surrounding area you want the paint to stick to.

Then just clean with alcohol or equivilant cleaner and paint.
