Got a 1995 toyota 22re.Had to put a timing chain and guides in it cause it was making a smacking noise.Got it all together and runs great no more noise but its not showing any oil pressure on my guages.When I took the timing cover off I did put a new o ring on the oil pump.Its not leaking.I changed the oil pressure guage and still doesnt show.I can take the oil filler cap off the valve cover and see that oil is splattering around.It is not making any noise like its not getting oil.Any suggestons.

I would check the oil pressure with a manual gauge first. That would rule out any problems with the switch or the dash gauge and tell you the actual oil pressure in real time.

you probably knocked the wire off the oil pressure sender when you did the timing chain job. Its on passenger side down by the pan bout halfway down the block. Bet a million bucks thats what it is.

No thats the first thing I checked got my son to hook a wire to the neg side of the battery then to that wire amd it sends the guage all the way over to high burys it really.Put another oil pressure guage on and checked it and it stll doesnt show anything.I think ill get a manual guage and see if its the guage wire or the pump.Never had any problems before the timing chain and guides it all worked great.Guess I shouldnt of messed with the oil pump o ring

you do a new timing chain tensioner? I would think if the oil pressure was that low or zero...you would hear the chain for sure.

Well I got in last might at 330 in the morning.I decided to pull the oil filter off and see if it had oil in it.It had a little so I decided to start the truck up.I started it up just for a few seconds.Then checked and there was oil all over the side of the engine and fender.I installed the filter and cleaned up the oil.Then pulled that new oil pressure sender off and cranked it for a few seconds and oil shot all over the side of the fender and all over the control arm.So I know I have oil pressure.Thats great news but I just cant believe three guages are bad.I thinkthe wire is good because if I ground the wire out it will bury the guage in the dash.What can I do now? Go buy another oil sending unit

And I hope you didn't use Teflon tape on the threads... Teflon being an insulator and the sender grounding through the block via its threads.

I know it was pretty stupid taking the oil filter off and cranking it also the sending unit.But I had to find out if there was any oil pressure or if its a wiring problem.And I never knew about the teflon tape.I sure put it on the first sender but not the second but it may have some still in the threads.Ill look tommorow when I get some time.Never even thought about that though.Gotta love these forums.Reallyl appreciate all the advice.Thanx

you know there is oil flow with your test...not what kind of pressure. Hook a real gauge to the sender port and be sure. Easy job.

I checked this morning on the teflon tape.I pulled the tape off the sensor and wire brushed the threads to get clean.Then I stuck a bore brush in the hole of the block and cleaned that out.Put the sensor in and still have no reading.I checked both sensors.On the way to work today I stopped at autozone and picked up a mechanical oil pressure guage.I will check the pressure tommorow morning.If I have good oil pressure I think ill just mount this under the dash and the hell with it.Thanks for all the help.

I hooked up my guage this morning.Started the truck up and I have 60 psi of oil pressure.So that leaves me to think I have two bad sensors I bought.Dont know if Autozone will take this back but worth a try.Im just glad I do have oil pressure.Started up with a high idle and it was 60 once it warmed up and idled down it stayed right at about 55.

If oil pressure warmed up was > 20 PSI, I'd be worried.


Too much oil pressure can be as bad as not enough. I've seen people spin rod and crank bearing shells because of too much pressure.

For most vehicles, warm and at idle less than that is well within specs. I have not checked the FSM on the exact oil pressure specs for this engine.

Are you sure you got the correct sensor for the guage and not an oil pressure switch for a light?

One for a light will be small with a spade connector. The sending unit for the guage will be larger and bell shaped, usually has a round connector that the factory harness goes onto at 90 degrees.
