My 87 4Runner, 22-re 5-speed transmissions seems like it got stuck in gear last night on the way home. I was shifting from 4th to 5th gear, and it wouldn't come out of gear. I finally managed to get into neutral, but I couldn't get it into any other gear after that. After I pulled over the truck it still wouldn't go into gear, so I called my Dad to tow me home. After he looked it over he thinks its that the shifter fork has lodged itself in gear. I'm not sure what exactly this is, and what entails fixing it.

Any insight on taking the top of the transmission off of a 22-re 5 speed would be greatly appreciated, or any other fixes, or ideas of what this problem might be.

Search "shifter seat bushing". There are some threads with links on how to get the shifter out to inspect it.

Basically, though, pull the shifter knobs off. Pull the console with vinyl boots. Pull the rubber boots....there are six bolts around the large plate they are fastened to. Then, pull the four bolts around the shifter retaining plate. Twist the shifter a bit while pushing down. And viola!

Inspection of the the shifter seat bushing will be a good place to start, you can start ruling out problems with the shifter from there. I think it is something more serious, though. Maybe a clutch issue, my first geuss.

I agree, did you check the fluid level in your clutch master cylinder? How's the back pressure on the clutch when you push it in?

check the clutch master and slave have someone under the truck as you push it and make sure the slave is moving....if it is check the shifter seat bushing...

Will it go into gear with the motor off? If it will then your clutch is gone. You should be able to sit and shift through all the gears without the motor running.

If the transmission will not shift with the motor off I would suspect some internal problems. Even with a bad clutch assy you should be able to pull it out of gear.

any attempt to move the shifter out of neutral and into a gear while the engine is running or not is meet unsuccessfully. The Slave cylinder and was bleed just the other week. I would appreciate some info on how to access the top of thes transmission. Thanks again for the stuff i've gotten already, and if its too much, I'll just swap trans with the one in my parts truck sitting around back!!

I gave you some info. Did you search shifter seat bushing? I wasn't suggesting that was your problem, just that it shows you how to access the top of the tranny. It's a lot easier than just swapping it out. But, do what you like.

You might get lucky and it be simple but i would imagine get ready to swap it out
