Exclamation Shifter Linkage/Cable Adjustment

My ('95, a/t, 4wd, V6) 4runner will not go into gear correctly. The truck moves slowly in both drive and NEUTRAL. The truck also will not engage in reverse. Before the reverse would not work at all it would take high rpm in order to engage. I have heard that the problem could be the shifter linkage. I know nothing of automatic transmissions and need help! I also have correct fluid levels in the vehicle.

Shame that no one answered this specific one unless there is another thread like it? My question here is: what would one use to lubricate the linkage points with or just replace them? I have not really taken a long look but it would be a great help.
