Shift Lever Removal

Ordered a new shift lever bushing from Marlin Crawler to try see if it will help my manual transmission (W56) from popping out of gear. Looking at my Haynes manual, it states "to disconnect the lever from the transmission, on some models a special tool is needed to detatch the lever". My truck is a 1990 4wd pickup, 22re, manual 5 speed. Can anyone say whether or not this would need the special tool? Otherwise, it looks like a job simple enough for me to tackle. But if there is anyone with any advice on how to do this, that they learned the hard way, I'd appreciate any and all input.
Thanks!

No special tools needed other than your brain and searching

Several threads on doing this exactly.

Thanks for the info. Didn't see anything in other threads about the special tool mentioned in my haynes manual, so thought I would ask here. Hope I didn't needlessly clutter the forum with a frequently asked question.

Push down & turn the ring around the shifter @ 30 degrees left, IIRC).

Hopefully this will not be a highjack but on my 85 1 ton 2WD, 5 speed, the shifter was extremely sloppy so I got the upper and lower bushings to fix it. When I pulled the shifter out I found that the plate that holds the shift lever in (with four bolts) has worn the hole in it to where the tension washer and spring underneath it can slip through. Now then, how do you disassemble the shift lever to replace the retaining plate? It is not the cast metal one like is found on 4x4's but a stamped out metal one. I'm not sure if the lever itself just pops off of the rest of the shifter or not. I think once I get it off I can weld a washer over the spot and make it work that way.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
