Shattered cran sprocket

'86 22re, Pulled timing cover and chain tensioner is out and rode up in the cover a ways and the chain is broke on one side of a link, but the crank pocket is shattered. How much might be damaged? Should I get a timing kit and stick it in and see what happens or should I remove the head look for damage? The po saysit was jut rebuilt 5,000 miles before it quit on him, and that after the rebuild it never would stay in time. Is there a way tell if there is bent valves with out pulling head off.

I'd pull the head, it's not that hard and is technically part of timing chain replacement procedure.

No the later 22re's have a different deck height on the block. You can get an aftermarket dual row chain kit for the later 22re's but it's spendy.

So I pulled head to look for damage and found some. The pistons and valves don't appear to have crashed but the cam will teter on the the center main, .045 worth of feelers will fit between cam and bearing surface. The pistons are loose in cylinders and you can twist them a little bit. I think the po's mechanic screwed him because he thinks it was rebuilt 5k ago.
Not a big deal for me as I only paid $400.
