shackle lift

i heard that a shackle lift was a little better than a body lift because its less stressful on the mounts and stuff plus its less expensive. i originally was going to do a b/l then found out that the shackle lift might not be a bad idea and am wondering what other people think about the two.

what year? PU or 4Rnr?

if you're IFS, you're only going to be able to shackle the rear, and even then only if you have leaves in the rear, not the linked and coiled 4Rnrs

ive got a 94 ext cab v6 5spd pickup. ifs with leaves in the rear. if i get the shackles then what could i do to the front if i dont have coils?

i had bad experience with shackles after about a year they made my brand new springs sag

for the front you could go with ball joint spacers (search) which involves a little cutting though, but still would be easier than a BL in my opinion...


for the most part I've seen shackles do no harm, as long as you don't go overboard with some stupid scary long ones, and crate some crazy angles... I'm running a set of WabFab's 3.5" longer shackles in the rear of my 91 PU, with the stock sagging springs the shackles were just to level it out actually, lol


what WILL ruin good springs is a set of lift blocks

my vote is bj spacers and an add-a-leaf (topguncustomz.com bout $50 bucks) thats what im running along with a 2in BL. teh body lift wasnt bad IMO, i did the bed myself and my dad helped with cab. alot of people dont like them, but i love it. makes them alot easier to work on.

that is something else i was thinking about the AAL and bj spacers. The aal makes the rear suspension stiffer though and i dont really want my suspension any stiffer.

IMO, body lifts should be done as a last resort. I might do a 1" one day, but I'll prolly follow it up with a 1" drive train lift to keep the IFS as strong and simple as possible.

Body lifts do nothing for you or the suspension but allow you to bolt on the biggest tire you can afford and over stress the steering and suspension even more than it's rated. Plus, I feel they are unsafe and in a severe enough impact, cause the body to shift from the frame...

Plus... Never seen a person that thought this was the bestest and cheapest option put one on right... NEVER!

A shackle is a good moderate lift and makes the suspension flex a bit more.

Ad a leave's are good too, and see if there's a spring FAQ here. Pretty sure there's on on Pirate and a guy points out Ford or Heep springs that will work, how much they lift and even shows pics of it doing it.

Cheap ad-a-leaves will sag before too long and ride like a logging truck till they do.

That sounds like a spring quality issue to me... I'd love to know who made yer springs...

ive got a 3" BL...not too bad, it does make things ALOT easier to work on, but i didint put it on, if i did i would have went a 1" the 3" looks kinda funky, but they didint move my rad down so its not hangin as low as the runner above...

It all depends on what you are trying to get out of your truck. It you just want a little more lift like 1" to 2" then do the shackles, they will not hurt a thing. If you want a lift for towing or hauling then I would strongly reccomend the the add a leafs or a whole new spring set up. I would just recommend a complete suspension lift. Good luck.

A quality BL will not explode, catch fire or leak nuclear waste. The bigger they are the more you see the frame and all. They will let you fit bigger tires without as much raising of your center of gravity as any suspension lift. I'd go moderate suspension lift and then BL an inch or two if still needed for clearance.
Bumper alignment is a pain after a BL.

i have a 1" bl. from 4crawler ready to install with some bj spacers and add a leafs coming on soon. should give the clearence/lift i need for now.

well i did buy the 20 shackles at advance auto and put them on the 3rd hole so i think that decreased the life of the springs!

alot of people knock bodylifts. not saying the people in this thread, but alot will talk trash about them and have no experience what so ever with them. i plan to put a 2in BL on my 85 as well. yes, they put un-needed strain on you rbody mounts, but suspension lifts and tires pu tstrain on things to. i have had my BL on fro abou t6 months and only 3 of the blocks have leaked nuclear waste. okenough rant from me

I have an AAl, after about 6 months of driving on it its still a bit stiff.
My truck sits up higher though, and they dont limit my flex at all...
at first they did, but they don't now

I'd have to say that a new set of springs would be a better idea.

Of course I'd also have to say that the very best lift you can do for a sagged rear end is the Zuk mod but I'm partial to it since I've done it on two rigs.
