I'm looking to mount my grandfather's old CB radio in my truck. It's a pretty big CB radio (not like the smaller cobra ones). I was thinking of mounting it at an angle, using the faceplate of the ash tray as a mounting point.

I don't want to drill any holes in the ashtray or the CB radio. I want to use something like epoxy to stick the radio to the ash tray, but I don't want it to be permanent. I want to do as little permanent damage to the radio as possible. It has a lot of sentimental value.

Any ideas on what I can use? the glue on velcro strips might un-stick in the summer, and epoxy resin might leave a nasty rocky clump on the radio. any other ideas?

Well any glue/epoxy will leave stuff behind, you could just wedge it in between the front driver and passenger seat. Or throw it in the gun/glove box.

I have very important cup holders between the seats, and the glove box is full of junk that I use a lot (mag light, multimeter, manual, paper towels, tire gauge, and other junk) That's why I'm looking to mount it elsewhere.

I've been looking online and I may just have to use epoxy.

I know glues and adhesives will leave stuff behind, but what I'm looking for is the one that leaves the least behind and is easier to clean up.

i used to work with a silicone type stuff that was meant for sealing things more than sticking, but it sticks things really well too....it's called Tremco 830...(look for anything that has the words "thermoplastic" and "elastomeric") the only problem is it takes a long long time to really set. you would have to clamp it or something possibly for a day or two, maybe even longer. this stuff sticks good after it sets though and peels off generally in one piece without ripping paint off...it stays elastic for a long time. years even.

Any acrylic type foam tape (3m body moulding tape) works really really really good. Or you can go to an RC/hobby shop and ask for Servo Tape which is even stronger.

Any residue left over can be removed by soaking a sponge/rag in brake cleaner and applying it, then carefully scraping with a plastic scraper/putty knife or plastic razor blade.

EDIT:Veclro + tranny hump. Please use some industrial velcro though, and plenty of it...

if it were me, i would make some kind of bracket. Glue is so tacky (no pun intended...)

I definitely wasn't going to have the thing loose between the seats. I was going to drill 2 holes and hop on down to ace hardware for some bolts to keep it in. The radio already has a mounting bracket that I was going to use if I mounted it to the floor.

If you guys saw my other thread, the "custom 'oh crap bar'" thread, you'd know my truck is a rough ride on the street and I don't want things being thrown around. Much less having the truck slide off the road in icey weather and roll over and having the radio smack me in the head (this is also why I'm avoiding mounting it on the ceiling.)

if your setup is like mine, I have a stupid space underneath the ash tray that just bolts off. Mines broken so im making my custom stuff holder

found some industrial velcro that seems to be working very well. twas in the fabric and craft section of wal-mart. ill get a pic so people have a future reference.
