Hey Ken, this is the thread I found very helpful when I was searching for painting with rustoleum. Its a honda ricer forum, but some good tech, along with alot of pics of alot of different rustoleum colors. He doesn't use clear, just lots of sanding.

man VW, thats nice work! any tips to throw in the mix here? I've been eying up paint and supplies, thinking about seriously doing my 4runner over...

edit:
and on another note, I knew the VR6 was a really tight V, but I didn't think it was that tight! damn... thats probably the perfect combination of I6 speed and V6 torque...

DAMN THATS A TIGHT V!!!!..jeeeezz...lmao..

ok guys..found some gloss white at walmart (rustoleum..only a quart of it too)

so i might get my guns this weekend (if i can get to the store..lots o plans) and maybe spray SOMETHING this comin up week..

im about to be moving out to go to college so i'll need to get this done within a couple weeks..and im sure i'll be prepping for atleast a week..( a little here and there)..bondo stuff..sand the dog piss out of the truck..

what do you guys suggest to clean the surface with right before i paint it???..mineral spirits?...acetone?..i got both soo..lol

to me..taping everything off is gonna be the hard part.....jeez..gotta take the doors off..the tailgate..the hood (might leave it on and just raise it and paint as best i can)..i'll have to get our 60gal air compressor workin again..i dont think our 4gallon will do it..lmao..

i'll be doing it under an open carport...but im hoping to get some tarps around the thing to keep alot of the wind from blowin shat around..

of course i WILL practice ALOT! (we have a couple wrecked cars i can practice on) that way i can kinda perfect the painting..its been about a yr since i painted anything with a gun..wont take but one fender to get me back in tha groove..

soo..if anybody has any tips..post em up..not just for me..but for everybody!!!

Take the word "Bondo" out of your vocabulary. Replace it with "Evercoat Rage Gold" instead.

You'll be much happier you did.

what the heck is evercoat rage gold???..i've seen lots of people use bondo...i wouldnt be using much..theres only like 2 places i'd use it..and they are small..about the size of a quarter...so yea..lol..i aint gonna buy any either...im gonna bum some off of a friend..we only have BIG tubs of it..so i'll just get a little from him

he just bondo'd and fiberglassed a 4in cowl onto his S-10..it looked GREAT with just the bondo..but then he fiberglassed over that..man..lol..you CANNOT tell it wasnt bought like that..

i'll also being running herculiner along the bottom of the sides..(from where the crease thats about 8in. or so from the bottom down)..i dont wanna do half the side...i think it looks ugly..i probably wont do the fenders either..later on down the road if i want to i will..so i'll herculine first..then spray

wow! im flattered Toyospearo!!!

it makes me feel A LOT better knowing that it doesnt look like ..hahaha

right now its just one coat of gloss white and about 3-5 coats of bedliner along the bottom..

im thinking of wet-sanding the gloss white..give it another coat..wet-sand again spray it again then if it looks good at that point..BUFF IT to make it shiiinnneeee!!!

might add a clear..i havent decided yet..i've noticed that red clay mud will stain the paint..forever...im thinking clear will get rid of this problem?? but im not entirely sure lol

guess i could just sand out the spots of the red clay remains and spray em again lol!

after i get that 3rd coat on..and i let it dry..i'll redo the bedliner on the sides with some roll-on Herculiner!! as it should be more durable and look better than this spray can stuff

i also noticed that the rustoleum bedliner (found at walmart) is a nice and deep dark black..and the dupli color bedliner from somewhere like autozone is more of a flat black.

my passenger side is sprayed with rustoleum and the driver side was sprayed with dupli color..and there is a difference..lol both are about the same protection wise though! no rock chips yet!!!

guess i could buy a gallon of gloss white rustoleum..and spray it through a HVLP gun right..that would definitely be a hell of alot faster than spray with the cans..although i have the nifty little handle that fits over the top of the can!!!

To the guys who are spraying, where are you doing it? Some say garage, do you mean the garage attached to your house or a shop/garage?

What about exhaust? Don't you have clouds of paint in the air and paint specs over all your stuff?

What kind of setups do you have?
