Seal packing on cam bearing caps 1 & 5
Question on applying the seal packing to the cam bearing caps. The FSM shows it like below.
On cap #5 the FSM shows a continuous bead on each side but the groove cut into the cap is not continuous. Also there are 2 small grooves around the bolt holes that shows no seal packing there.
On cap #1 the FSM shows a dab of sealant on the corner edge and not the grooves cut into the cap.
or does the sealant only go in all the grooves cut into the cam bearing caps

Yes, only put RTV in the grooves. Dont go too light on it, make sure theres a LITTLE extra in there.
Put some on the outside of the cam seals too, make sure to put oil on the inside of the seal so it doesnt burn out when you start it.
Toyota FIPG is permatex RTV by the way, its the same stuff. .

re: '89 4Runner 3vze camshaft bearing caps sealant
Sure takes a while to find some of this info. The bearing cap sealant is like hard plastic on my caps and head as shown in the attached pictures. Maybe this happens after 273K miles. Some of it just broke out. The manual is sometimes hard to decipher or believe when you have something that conflicts with what you're seeing. Thanks for the post regardless of how old it is. (well yeah, I haven't done that much of this type of work but I'm doing it)
