same rattle after rebuild

hello, hello..

Just got my truck back from a long block rebuild on my 95 4x4 3.0... she runs great, still slow but didnt expect that to change.. new long block, timing assembly, pumps, gaskets, seals, motor mounts,etc.. My existing outer components topped off the build..

What DIDNT go away was this annoying rattle sound (like shaking a bag of aluminum cans or shacking a can filled with b.b.'s). My guess is that it is in the upper portion like intake manifold...? It sounds like it is coming from there too! very isolated in that area.. With a rebuild, I was expecting a fresh, QUITE engine... the new engine is great but its so quite that the RATTLE stands out even more and is really killing my new engine "feel"... This is the last issue and then she is almost perfect (atleast for a 95).

I had read many posts about "rattles" and they all lead to timing belts or related.. I can pretty much rule out that it my case b/c everything around this "noise" is new or equivalent..

Sorry for the ramble, PLEASE HELP WITH IDEAS!
thanks
yota

The valve rails and rockers were probably not replaced. I think that those things are the cause of most of our top end noise problems. I know what you mean cause I have the same situation. I got a shortblock and got the heads worked and mine still taps. I hate that sound. I wish I could afford a new rocker assembly right now.

On a side note, you said it was still slow. After I got my engine together it was painfully slow but as it got broken in it got much better and now it's actually pretty zippy.

thats good to know.. I hope mine will pep up a bit after break in... It is much smoother than before.. What is involved in changing the rails and rockers? It may be something I just have to live with... I have the aftermarket K and N intake, so you can hear it especially loud on mine.. Is there any way to minimize this noise? I was really hoping it was an easy fix, but I havent been that lucky so far, so why start now? LOL

I'm not sure about the 3.0, mine's a 22re. on the 22re the assembly is held on to the head by the head bolts. I'm not sure that it is safe to remove the head bolts without replacing the head gasket though and I'm not even sure that the 3.0 is built the same.

Man I looked at LCE and they don't even seem to have a rocker shaft for the 3.0. Now I'm curious. I'm going to look more into it after lunch.

No the 3.0 does not have rockers. The cam lobe contacts the valve directly(actually contacts the shim and bucket which is situated on the valve stem/spring).

to the OP- Are you hearing injector noise?

Oh, thanks for clearing that up. I havn't seen that type of design before. Sorry for the useless information too.

thank guys... well, my worst fear came true... I went out in the driveway this morning and found a large oil spot... Now I could be wrong, but with a rebuild, there should be NO oil leaks whatsoever., right? What a frustrating feeling.......

Im pretty sure i can hear my injectors, but it might/probably is mixed with a little valve noise.

It might be just the injectors though like zlathim suggested.

Edit:

Did you find where the leak is coming from?
