Safest high speed in third gear?

On my 86 Toyota truck 4x4 2.4 5 speed EFI...don't have a lot of power going uphill,so what would be the fastest one should drive in third gear in MPH?

Depends on differential gear ratio and tire size.

4000rpm engine speed is not excessive if your engine is sound.

Mine has got 280,000 on it, I seldom run it over 3300rpm, but thats just me.

Was a turbo truck originally,so maybe that's what the gears are,and the tires are 235/75/15's.The engine seems a little tired.Just wondering if I can go 55mph in third gear uphill without problems. No loss of power on the flat roads.

Drive it like you stole it. Pedal down & full speed ahead. If you are not spinning it at 5k rpm you will not hurt it. Its a long arm truck engine so it can take a beating. I had the same problem due to a beaten to death camshaft ( bad oil). If you feel like it pull the cover and look at the cam, if its like mine and missing the top of the lobes, its time for a head overhaul.

If it used to be a turbo truck, is it now? If not now prolly no power cause its not go the tirbo to make the extra HP it meant to have.

Does that mean the ecu is non-turbo as well, or is the turbo ecu installed?

If its the turbo ecu its looking for boost to come up, and its not there.

Not to mention the compression ratio is less on Turbo engines than the N/A version......

I used to drive a couple hours on the freeway too my dads house with my 4 speed. I didn't have a tach but that thing had to be at least 4000 rpm. It always ran and idled better after those trips. guess it burned out some of the carbon or what not.

Oh yeah, good point! You take a turbo off of a turbo dependent engine and not much power.

Run it to redline if you like. The factory redline is very conservative, and was engineered to run at that RPM. If you do indeed have lower compression motor, you could adjust the base timing up 4-5 degrees to get compression up.

MLDave,
The user's manual states fastest safe speed one can go in each gear. That assumes stock gear.

For reference/comparison, the fastest my stock 22RE manual with stock gears, before a rebuild, on 235-75-15's can run uphill on Tejon Pass is 55 MPH in 4th gear.

I haven't tested newly-rebuilt engine, yet.

Regards,
Ray

Ray.the plate in the engine bay shows a R151F tranny, but can't be sure if the truck has the original or not.The owners manual I have which did not come with the truck shows the 22R-TE can do up to 71 mph in third and 103 in fourth.,but obviously not uphill.I do get a stinky smell now and then when accelerating so perhaps the catalytic converter is going out and that would effect the power.

You have to check P/N for the ecu in the kick panel. Its the only way. most actually say it on the sticker. Safe speed is 5k rpm, anything over that is looking to throw a rod. No steady state rpm, I would say 3500rpm since that would be about 80mph on a stock truck.

Now if you have the turbo ecu, well two choices. live with it or get a Garrett T06 setup on it. I have never checked to see if the two ecu's share the same pin outs.

I've done 70+ MPH in 3rd in my 88 4Runner, doing that as necessary to keep out of the slow lane on I-5 north and south bound over Tehachapi. As many times as I've driven over that, at least 15 times in each direction, I'd guess that amounts to about 250 miles of 70 in 3rd gear.

Damn, I miss that truck.

Stinky, rotten egg smell is caused by the converter getting hot and releasing the sulphur it's soaked up; nothing necessarily worth worrying about. I'd be more worried about things if I jumped on the throttle and DIDN'T smell that.

Skypilot and all, took off the kick panel and the part number is 89661-35070 and it has 22R on it, so I think it's the correct ECU.Thanks for all the replies.

I floor board mine in third to get uphill. If you have a tach 4500rpm should be right around 60 ~ 65 mph. Don't worry about it. Anything over 5k rpm is not good, and can bust a rod bolt due to age (metal fatigue). What I really think you need to do is check your cam lobes for wear. I've been noticing a lot of wiped cams from modern "roller cam" oil thats bad for solid lifter cams used on the 22Rxx engines.
