RUST, need some advice

RUST, need some advice

New to the forums. hows it goin.

I recently purchaced a 89 toyota pickup. 22 re, lifted etc. after having the truck home for a week i noticed a spot on the inside of the frame. kinda looked like it split at one point and now has rusted out. it located on the passenger side rail, right beside the gas tank. after some research i have found out this is a very common place for these trucks to rot. so i plan on pullin the gas tank and box to fix it. anybody else done this? what is involved? etc

When you pull the gas tank, be careful of the fuel lines. You will need to pull the fuel pump to drop the tank.

Do yourself a favor and buy new guts for the tank... I bought all mine from ebay on the cheap. I had the same hole. I took the bed off and gas tank out and welded a box around the frame... Also be carefull removing brake lines from the frame rail cause they will be a coroded mess and brittle...

It's really an easy fix. Good luck!

yeah i got a wicked deal on a brand new tank so ill prob use that

In rust belts Por 15 is OK for the outside, but for the inside out, mmmmm.

89' 4x4 with severe frame frust where leaf spring attaches

Hey everyone thanks for info so far. This is my first post.

I recently bought my 89' 4x4 pickup and soon discovered rust and frame deterioration where the leaf spring attaches on the passenger side. It has become worse and needs remedied asap.

Does anyone know if there are any links on how to drop the gas tank and take off the bed?

Once I get to the rust spot I'm going to weld a sleeve around the frame.

89Yotta how did the fix go?

I used this link http://img.toyotanation.com/forum/80...ml#post3100004 to take off the bed, it's not hard even i managed, and with the bed off it's so much better to see and assess all the undercarriage. The tank too is just a handful of bolts but on my truck there was one very problematic fuel line where it is stuck to a bit bolt, wound up with a kink and a pinhole had to cut out. Here's a link in case your bracket is salvageable. http://forums.exploringnh.com/showthread.php?t=6779 and here's a link in case rust welded your bolts http://web.dimebank.com/tech/BrokenBolt.html - i have a ornery catalytic removal challenge if you want any practice with rustwelded bolts. Had a dream. nightmare? someone told me it could take all day to drill through one rusted bolt. Haven't tackled it yet, but got through a different small one good enough the other day.

I made sure everything got lots of PB Blaster well in advance of the wrenches. Now the bolts are all soaking in molasses to see if that stuff works like the aussies say.

^ what was that about??? Yup, i remember reading a thread about sequoias and their frames rusting....
