rough start/rough running!

Ok, so from the top. i was driving home from work a few days ago and it felt like someone yanked off my fuel line or something, my runner started running real rough and misfiring hard, complete loss of power untill it finally died. I turned off the key, and originally figured it was my battery, my neg terminal still has that little dinky connector and it broke so i jimmy rigged it and made sure it was tight, and tried starting it again, nothing, like it was getting no spark, so i thought my coil next, took the plug out of it and the connector broke off i figured that was it, but a new toyota plug set later and i found out i broke it when i took it off lol. I have replaced the cap and rotor, plug wires, fuel filter, am going to look at my ECM next. Basically when it DOES start it idles very rough and when i push the accelerator it barely goes up in RPM and kinda lopes untill 3,500 then it jumps up and holds around 4 grand. If i let go of the pedal and let it free idle it just starts to lope and lope getting lower in RPM till it finally dies. i dont know how many miles it has on it, the odo died at 360k lol, i have replaced the HG, and timing belt, and plugs all recently within 2 months, i have no checked to see if timing belt jumped a tooth but it doesnt feel like its that. any suggestions would be great.

If a 3.4 swap is simpler than tracking down worn-out wiring or plugged fuel components, then go for it.

Check all the vacuum hoses and intake for cracks/leaks. All ground wires tight and not corroded?

mike, its been nothing but probs with this thing since day 1, i have a brand new wiring harness in it, redone grounds, sprayed ether along all my hoses, took off upper plenum to check the rear of the block for leaks, nothing all the wiring is new, i just put a new ground wire on replacing the old stock unit, so yes, a 3.4 swap at this point sounds like a good deal imo..

fuel injector system was professionally flushed last month but im thinking of taking the injectors back out to re check again, see if they are fouled up or plugged.

I drove a co-worker's '96 5-speed Xtra-Cab last night. I was reminded of how much balls a 3.4 has, so yeah, go for the swap. And they sound great when they rev. I recently replaced the intake elbow (coming off the throttle body) on my truck because it was full of cracks. I mention this because the cracked one produced the same problems you describe. No doubt you've checked all the intake stuff (air flow meter, etc.) but, as RW mentioned, it might be worth another look. Hope it helps.
