Rough idle, excessive fuel consumption?

OK, Saturday I had my car in the garage all day, (spoiling it in the heated shop at work), to put axles in it. Then on the way home, the car will barely idle.

The car has been like this till last night after an 11 mile ride home the car idles again.

Then this morning poor idle till about 8-9 miles into the ride to work. it strarts to run right again.

I've read some posts about what I think is called a "cold start injector?" Anybody think this could be my culprit?

It also sucks the fuel down like a cold Miller on a hot Summer day.

One thing that can cause this is a bad temperature sender. Is it spitting black stuff at idle? If the ECU thinks it's cold out, it adjusts the mixture.

I imagine the cold start injector leaking would do the same thing - both are triggered by a temp sensor.

Hey Farmer,

Your cold start inj. has its own timer, and should completely shut off @ 95 F, coolant temp. The timer is next to temp sensor on front of intake, has GRN and BLK wires on plug, going to it. Pull the plug.

This will tell You if timer is faulty not if inj. itself is leaking.

Thanks Kiwi

temp sender?

original post-"One thing that can cause this is a bad temperature sender. Is it spitting black stuff at idle? If the ECU thinks it's cold out, it adjusts the mixture."

It is spewing black at idles, where is the temp sender?
I replaced the collant temp sensor below the t- stat housing, is it the one on top of the t-stat housing?

Hey Farmer,

The temp sender is for the temp gauge, the temp sensor is for the computer. The cold start timer acctuates the cold start valve, below 95 F.

Your symtoms sound like the timer is staying on to long, but could also be the temp sensor.

You check the timer first because this is easy, simply pull the plug. This cuts power to the c.s. inj.. If Your rich exaust cleans up, Then replace the timer.

For this problem we dont care about the temp sender.(For Gauge)

Temp sensor (2) wires @ connecter, colors are, brn/blk, that means brown with black tracer. The other wire is grn/wht.

The c.s. inj. timer (2) wires @ connecter, colors are grn and the other wire is blk. No tracer colors. The Timer is close to the Sensor and kinda looks like a sensor.

Thanks Kiwi

stll a little fuzzy Kiwi, but here is what I did before I drove it home. On top of the t-stat housing is some kinda sensor and the wire was broke. I rewired it today and the car warmed up and drove fine all the way home. What do you think?

I think, If it ain't broke don't fix it. Thanks for the help guys. I guess I'll keep it a while longer.
