rocker arm and cam repacement
In my '91 22re I recently discovered that I have some cam lobes and rocker arms wore out. Its obvious that the cam and 4 or 5 rocker arms have to be replaced. My question is this, do I HAVE to replace ALL of the rockers or would the ones where the cam and rocker is good be ok? Would the rockers that show no wear be ok on a new cam or would I end up in the same situation? I'm doing the repair on a budget so any savings I can find will help. That being said, if the used rockers are going to cause a problem, can they be resurfaced cheaper than they can be replaced or resurfaced at all?
Also, the motor is bored .020 over, the head has been shaved .010 and the block is shaved .010. Although the truck has ran fine with a stock cam, should I go with a bigger cam or back with a stock one? Would a bigger cam cause any interferance between the valves and pistons? Would it help on gas milage?
Am I overthinking all this?

Was it an ebay cam and rockers? Was it a factory cam?
I'd get either an engnbldr.com cam or a good used oem cam. Avoid aftermarket rockers. You want toyota rockers only...either new...good used..or refaced.
I believe 22reperformance.com sells refaced rockers.
Dont be cheap on the cam and rockers....I strongly suspect the bad cam and rockers were not oem stuff.

To be honest, I built the engine in 2004 and I'm not exactly sure where the cam came from but the rockers are original.
At this point I will look into the two websites you gave. Should I replace ALL the rockers? Bigger cam or stock?

Id replace them all...that way they get a fair shake at breaking into a new cam.
Bigger cam is up to you. I did the 268 engnbldr cam. I aslo have the rv head and a header too. Huge difference in power and power curve.

Well, by being on a budget, I need to know if it's worth giving the old rockers a shot. Guess it's really just a gamble. Think I'm gonna talk to some folks this week and find a cam that I'll like. Doesn't seem to be that much price diff...maybe I can swing it...just depends. Save money on rockers to get a bigger cam? Maybe ALL refaced rockers....idk...gonna have to sleep on it...

Your most likely going to have to replace all of the rockers. The reason the rockers/cam fail is the rockers have a small oil hole in them that sprays the cam lobes, metal shavings from the rocker shafts clogs the hole so the lobe starves for oil causing it to wear very quickly. Once you dissemble the rockers you will see the area the rocker pivots on will be VERY rough. You will also need new rocker shafts to properly fix this problem.

These guys sell a complete rocker assembly for a very reasonable price using oem rockers.

ok, at this point I have decided to go with a 22reperformance.com complete rocker assembly. the cam is another issue. the truck is, and has been for a while now, a pavement princess. It sees lots of highway miles (about 3000 a month). HOPEFULLY, that will soon change...its ready for retirement. do I go with a stock cam? rv cam? or some other size? I'd like a little more torque out of the little thing but I don't want to sacrifice gas milage to do it. Also, I want it to be able to handle 75 mph....little help or suggestions? I know very little about cams. I can install and remove them all day but which one does what...I'm lost.

From what I've read, different cams change the power profile on the engine. More low end torque vs. more high end power, etc. For a pavement princess I would assume you would want more high end power, since I think low end torque is more useful offroad.

call 22reperformance before you place your order and ask them about the cam. theyre cams are like $125. if they dont answer just call em back. theyll pick up eventually. theyre cool to deal with when you finally get ahold of em.
