This isn't my write up. I'm merely putting together info I found, as I'm interested in the retrofit.

This comes up from time to time, but I've heard of very few people actually doing this retrofit. I would like to mount one, as I want to add a jerry can holder, a Hi Lift etc. Plus, I think it was one of the cooler factory options available.

First I found a tire carrier at a junk. Next I found that an internal support was placed inside the body at the factory on 4Runners that have the rear tire carrier. I ordered the support from toyota ($63). Once I got it, I looked inside the fender and noticed that I would need to do some cutting. So off I go to the local welder to have the inside fender cut out with a torch. Then I installed the carrier support and drilled the 8 holes through the body that hold it to the fender. Then I took it back to the welder to replace the parts he cut out to get the support in. I also added a 12V power outlet as long as I had the rear all torn apart. This was a larger project that I thought it took about 25 hours to complete. I was able to use the original tail gate from my truck.

so where did you get the actual arm that swings? dealer, along with the plate that mounts to the gate?

i have been interested in adding one of those as well as a spoiler to my 95. How large of a tire can that hold?

I think a pretty big tire, like 35" plus.

I had the swing out on my '91. Carried a 35, just touched the bumper with it, and use a gun to fully tighten the retaining nuts (you could start them by hand though.).

I ditched it because I couldn't carry anything long out the back of the truck with it out there. Not sorry I did.... roof mounted was much better.

I've entertained the idea of trying this on the Tacoma, just to see if it can be done. I don't know that I've ever seen one retrofitted to a truck or Tacoma.

probably harder than you think... IIRC, the 1st gens have a more squared off corner on the rear while the second gens it is more rounded...

I had looked into doing this for my pickup but ditched the idea early on. I'm going to fab one up that welds to my marlin rear bumper.

Attaching the swing out carrier to the box of a pick-up would pull the rear corner of the body out of line. There is nothing to hold the side square, unlike the runner body which is a solid structure.
If you wanted to try it it would be advisable to extend the arm to connect with the opposite side of the truck or you might try a gusseted arm from the frame connecting with the re-enforcing plates inside the box.
It might be simpler to just hang the swing out carrier on a post mounted to the bumper and forget the body mount.

The Kennesaw mountain accesories bumper looks like it would work for a truck or runner.

After looking at the Tacoma, you're absolutely right. I think with a certain amount of fabbing, it could be done, but it would require some pretty extensive demo and rebuild of the corner of the bed. It would be much easier to simply build a rear bumper and have a swing out carrier on that.

No sense in making the idea harder than it needs to be...

I'm interested in the same mod to my 94. I totally want the marlin crawler rear bumper for my runner, but it wont fit around the lower carrier mount. I came up with this idea to mod the bumper to make it fit, tell me what you think:
