Retrofitting ABS
What are the components to the ABS? As i understand it, the chain of components is the ring gear--> ABS sensor --> ECU??? ---> some kind of actuator??? --> brake lines brakes.
Anyone retrofitted ABS to their Toyota? Is the ECU different? I don't have the pigtail off the diff (nor did the original diff), but I notice that I do have an ABS light on the dash which never lights up, but is there.

My girlfriends 1995 4cyl SR5 4runner doesnt have ABS aswell.
Mine has it (rear ABS only), and it works fantastic! Great on those hard slippery stops.. Keeps the arse in in line.
Isnt SR5 almost base model on 4runners? And LIMITED is the new SR5?

I've never really needed ABS, its a great system on really slick roads, but the LSPV works well enough. I'm asking out of curiosity.
SR5 used to be the top end (Sport trim, R-series motor, 5 spd tranny), but now the SR5 is the base and limited is the top end.

I don't know about the one on pre-1995 Toyota 4wds, but having been in cars with ABS during panic stops (as a driver and passenger), I think ABS does some great things. For one, your steering during stopping is much improved with front ABS.
Once again, never used ABS on a 2nd gen 4Runner.

They only came with rear ABS anyway witch is crap considering drum brakes on the back. It is also a hydraulic actuated system that runs off the power steering pressure. Hokey if you ask me. I have ripped them out of 2 trucks because of the lines leaking and sensor problems. It was a crap option that was a "selling feature". Don't do it.......

Modern ABS is okay.
Old car ABS is nothing to get excited about.
Old domestic car ABS is all crap. Just like the cars they were put on.
I'd spend my time and effort on something more worthwhile.

I'm not actually going to do this, it was a mental exercise. Now, if you got the ABS actuator and used it for the front and were a programming wiz, it would be incredibly cool to make an ATRAC system. It seems to work well on the FJ. mIght be cheaper to go buy a FJ when all the shootings done though...
