Hey guys, I got a 95' 4runner and I need to replace my starter. I was reading jimrockford's write up on how to replace it and was wondering if you really needed the 24 " extension for the socket or not. I only have like a 6 inch, and no deep sockets and was wondering if i could do the swap or not.

Also, How much about would it be to get it done at a dealership or mechanic?

a 24" is very helpful in reaching the nut and bolt. harbor freight has them very cheap. it is a very straight forward process. make sure you disconnect the positive battery cable before you start.

spend the couple bucks and buy the extension -- it is simple - just be patient - unhook the wires, then the two bolts and then wrestle it out of there.

I dont got that 3vze but on my 22r I can pop a starter out in less than a minute.

I did a starter on a friends 5vze and extensions make life so much easier =) ... Now getting that SOB back in is a different story LOL

On the 3.0, extensions are necessary. You don't need a single 24" long extension, but you need to be able to make it. I think I used a 6" long 1/2" extension, then a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter, then two 6" long 3/8" extensions, then one or two 3" long 3/8" extensions. I might have had a swivel adapter in there too... I can't remember. Anyways, it worked fine, and I already owned all those extensions, so I didn't have to buy anything.

I used the link from JimRockford's tutorial and it went pretty smoothly. That's a great link for replacing the starter. The extensions are quite necessary, and a breaker bar to put on the end of the ratchet handle was helpful too. I managed to get the starter out the wheel well pretty easily, just had to remove the retaining clip for the positive wire and pull that and the other wiring harness for the other contact out of the way. A quick twist and a little bit of wiggling and it was out. Putting it back in was much quicker and easier than taking it out for me. Removing the tire was helpful too.
