Could someone let me know for sure if I have to remove the oil pan in order to replace the oil pump?? - it's a '94 22RE - Not that I can't remove the pan, I removed it twice in the past five months (replacing rod and main bearings) and would like to avoid doing it again if I don't have to. Thanks much.

you do not have to remove oil pan, oil pump is connected to timing cover and crank.

You do not need to touch the pan, you don't even have to drop the oil.
Radiator, fan and belts need to come out, and the pulley comes off, then it's 5 bolts that hold the oil pump to the timing cover.
Pack the new pump with grease, sealant on the top oilpump bolt, and reassemble everything.
Easy fix!

If you haven't already, you may want to just do the timing chain and water pump while you're at it. You can even do that without dropping the oil pan. Every 100K miles is the guidance I believe....

I think it's closer to 140k miles on the lower-end of the scale but I've seen a few 22Rs that went far beyond that before getting a new timing chain, depends on driving habits I suppose.

I just did this yesterday. I didn't drain the oil and left the radiator in. I removed the fan and belts. I'm guessing about 1/4 cup of oil spilled out of the pump when I removed it. Have some towels handy.

If your crank pulley is grooved from the oil seal, consider installing a seal of different thickness to ride on an unworn part of the pulley. Some links about that:

The top bolt gets some sealant. My manual says torque that top bolt to 18 ft/lbs. The other upper two get 14 ft/lbs., and the two shorter ones neareast the oil pan 9 ft/lbs.

Pack the pump with Vaseline or grease. Wipe a little grease on the seal lip. Some grease also helps hold the pump's o-ring in place as you put the pump on.
