I thought my water pump died, till I started taking it apart. Now, I know where the water pump is on my 3.0 V6. The bearings died completely in my fan bracket. I got a new part from NAPA, but am having trouble installing it. THe tensioner for the timing belt(mounted on the bracket) hits the side of the tensioner that piviots on the block. If I remove the tensioner, I can install the bracket, but then I can't put in the tensioner. I am using a socket on the camshaft to put tension on the belt, and pivoting the tensioner, but I can't slip the hydraulic tensioner into position. I know I'm missing something.

Is it removing the last piece of bracket? The hydraulic tensioner tends to hit this bracket when I'm installing the fan bracket.

I'm going to recheck my fsm, the one I downloaded today isn't as good as the one I have around here somewhiere....

Are you trying to install the tensioner with the pushrod depressed? Have you got the tensioner "flange" turned the right way?

No, it's not depressed. I have seen that in my Haynes manual since posting. Is that the key? Can it be depressed with a vise? I don't have a press.

Which flange? I didn't remove the tensioner on the block. I just unbolted the tensioner from the old bracket, and bolted onto the new. The car isn't here right now, it's at a friend's house, so I have to work from memory.

Thanks. I didn't have any of my good documents when I was first trying this. Unfortuanately, I think debris from the bearings in the fan bracket were probably down by the bottom pulley.

I reassembled and test drove, and had some odd noises and a lack of power. Teardown showed metal shavings and the timing belt gouged. Next step is timing belt, along with a good inspection of everything.
