Replacing CV shaft c-clip with snap ring

I am changing a CV shaft on a '92 4Runner and it needs a new c-clip. I have been to all of the auto parts stores in my area and none have a clip like the one that came off. Can I use a snap ring (the kind with the two holes on the top for pliers) in place of the original c-clip? Are the snap rings as strong as the c-clips?

Did you try the dealership or home depot or lowes? Any home improvement store should carry these clips.

All three of those places are about 60 miles from me. I tried Napa, Autozone, Kragen, Carquest, Orchard hardware, Fastenal, and a few local places. I have had the best luck at Napa auto parts, but their clips are slightly different. I think theirs might be standard and I need a metric or something. I think I found the part number for the clip, so I guess I will just have to go to the dealer.
