Replaced CV shaft. Lock ring and washer will not fit.

My truck is an 86 4WD IFS. The CV shafts I bought are SHURTRAC and I'm certain they are for this truck.

This is a picture of my hub assembly with a brand new CV shaft, inner and outer brass bushings and freshly greased brand new wheel bearings. Those are the spindle washers and star washer in the middle. However, the smaller washer that slides over the CV spline and the snap ring that are in the foreground (in front of the brass bushing, spindle washers and star washer) I cannot get to go on this new cv shaft for the life of me. I've pulled and twisted and tried to convince it but there is just not quite enough room to get the snap ring to go on.

I have looked for diagrams and directions from others online and most instructions that I read make no mention of my problem washer and snap ring. Do I even need them? I get the idea behind them - so that the cv shaft spline end will stay fully put in the hub. But there is a center bolt that goes on the end of the spline after the locking hub is installed that does that same thing.

What am I doing wrong? Anyone run into this before or have any info or advice?

The seal between the half-shaft and the spindle back haas to be compressed.

Try putting a bolt into the end of the half-shaft and pulling.

There is the possibility that the seal on the new half shaft and the seal on the spindle back are not compatable with each other.

Toyota changed seal designs and the half-shaft seal and the seal on the spindle back that it mates to, must be changed out in compatable pairs.

I am not sure that the bolt and washer can pull the shaft in tight enough that the back seals are effective. I'd want the washer and snap-ring installed.

The problem is the 86 knuckle is different than what the seal is designed for. The seal can be modified to work. I had to shave off some of the rubber from the bottom of the seal so it would fit deeper in the knuckle. Then the snap ring can be installed.

Very interesting and good solution. Thanks for chiming in everyone. I'm considering running the snap ring and washer through my drum sander to thickness sand them ever so slightly smaller.

Anyone got a part number or name for the little CV spline washer that we're talking about?

Yeah..I know everything. Including the fact that there isn't one part number for it. There's at least couple. Because they aren't all the same thickness.

Haha. Thanks! Maybe a thinner one would allow me to get that snap ring on. Off to get the dial calipers.

Yeah the spacers I've got now are .080 or about 2.0 mm. I'll pick up a couple of 1.8mm spacers and see if that does the trick to let me get that snap ring on. Does that sound like a reasonable solution?

.2mm difference? I kinda doubt that's enough. But you'll figure it out one way or another. At this point the choice is yours which way you want to solve it.
