Removed head on 86 22r, see issues?

Oil was getting into the coolant. Found nothing with the timing chain cover & then removed the head. There is a lot of cabon build up, especially on the one valve. Does anything look out of the ordinary for a 22r motor with 299xxx miles?

22r

head

looks about right for almost 300k!

at that kind of mileage, personally, I'd consider a full rebuild

but if that's not the plan, at least replace the valve stem seals; I guarantee you those are leaking down and letting oil get into the combustion chambers and causing some of the buildup you see

that and a good head gasket replacement, and I wouldn't be surprised if you got another 100k out of it, assuming the bottom end is in good shape and not making any noise

I agree with the rebuild 300k so that motor is prolly tired.... they are very easy to do if you get a long block from a motor supply house!!!! And most come with 100k warranty!!!

Looks right for 300,000. Would agree it's time for a rebuild...

But temp fix? well a rebuilt head is a start....

consider this: rebuild the head, slap it back together, and
run till the bottom end gives. Then for the next engine you
have a lightly used top end....

that way you don't spend too much money at once, and you will
get the max life out of that engine... (maybe start using good oil.)

take the head to a qualified machine shop and have them clean and pressure test the head. You obviously had coolant leakin into the 2nd cylinder. Was the head gasket bad on that cylinder? could you tell?

Thanks for the replies & suggestions.

It doesn't smoke, but had begun using a bit more oil over the past several months. The coolant overflow reservoir was caked in oil, which led to the state of the motor today. One of the head bolts for cylinder #2 was covered in carbon at the threads & certainly more difficult to remove than the rest. Don't know if that means anything, but it can't be good if it does.

The bottom end has always seemed fine.

I couldn't see any obvious damage (not obvious to me anyway) to the head gasket.

Sounds like sending the head off to a machine shop is the next step. I'd rather not do a rebuild, as it may cost about twice as much as the truck is worth. However, i'd much rather save it & keep it on the road.

That's perfectly normal as some of those head bolts go through oil passages in the motor.

Just do yourself a favor and clean all of those head bolt threads out real good in the block. use a thread chaser not a tap.

You might also want to consider new head bolts as well.

its ok to reuse the 22r head bolts if they are in good shape visually. just make sure to clean the threads on the bolts and chase the threads in the hole like xxxtreme was saying.
