Hey everyone, I finally took my top off today. Well...I put the top back on and now my back window will not go up. During removal, the 3rd top bolt (top meaning the top row of bolts) from the driver's side broke off. Could this have anything to do with my problem? I plugged the cable back up for the rear windshield wiper and while researching my problem, I read something about a bolt located in the driver's side near the roll bar. Can anyone shed some light on this "bolt" for me? In case you were wondering, I have "searched"...I know this question probably pops up a lot. haha Thanks guys.

If your top is off it wont go up. There is a switch in one of the bolt holes on the bed rails. Look for it or just put the bolts back in the rails. It will go up once there is a bolt in the hole. If the top is all put back together and it still wont go up then you have a problem.

The bolt you broke should not have anything to do with the window. There is a switch in the bed on the drivers side that is tripped when the top is bolted on (or unbolted). I think it is the second bolt from the back on the drivers side. I bypassed that switch many years ago and don't remember much about it. Now I can roll up the back window with out the top. For whatever good that does.

The bolt you need to put in is on the driver side second from the back.

Why would you want your rear window to go up without the top on? You need a speedbrake or something?

OK...I did forget to mention that my top IS back on...I've been trying to get back on the the forum to edit that, but i've had internet problems. So yes...haha...sorry...my top is back on. Thanks for the posts though.

Yes, they have all been put back in, aside from the broken bolt that I mentioned. However, that isn't the problem I guess.

Lol yea. I have a big paracute I drag behind my truck so my friend with his H2 feels like hes not the only one lol.

Should I perhaps remove the bolt with the "trigger" (for lack of a better word) and try to put it back in again?

a lot of times if you tighten the bolt that hits the button you can break the button and that would cause the window to not go up. mine on the other hand has problems going up and down because the motor is crapping out and the regulator is so rusted the window doesnt stay in it lol

My trigger/switch broke so I just ran a jumper between the connection. Just remove the plastic side panels in the back and the switch can be disconnected and bypassed.

Being able to roll up the window with the top off does make it easier to wash the inside of the back window.

Excuse my ignorance, but could you please explain how you bypassed it? I did remove the panel and found that switch you mentioned.

Bypassing is just making the control module think that switch is closed, jumper wire across the switch or the connector should do the trick.

Did the same thing myself after the damn switch busted and fell off into the panel.



Take a piece of wire and crimp a spade connecter to either end (female if I recall) and then jumper the switch with that wire. I used some electrical tape to keep the wire in place and (hopefully) keep some of the dust out of it.

x2. did that yesterday. switch managed to break itself while I was driving yesterday

I cut the connector off, and used a butt connector to join the two pieces of wire. another easy fix would be using a murrette (marette? I don't know how to spell it)..

Hhhhmmm...thanks guys. Today a buddy of mine (the same guy who helped me fix my brake lights) took a look at it and he thinks the problem is actually coming from the switch in my center console. When he tested it, he couldn't get any power. On the way home from work tonight I did notice that the button was not lit up (yes its plugged in). By some miracle, I think I have found a junk yard that has an '87 4Runner in it, so I'll be stopping by there Wesnesday. One thing is for sure...I'm getting tired of driving around with a trash bag taped over my back window...
