alot of people like the maxxis line for a good tire for the regardless of price and they are fairly cheap.

as far as gears, different rigs come with different gears, 4:10's are fine for 33's

4.10's are doable.....with a 5 speed. Realistically, 4.88's for a 5 speed and 5.29's if you've got a automatic.

Tire wise, depends on if your looking at a A/T or M/T tire.

I have a 1990 4runner, v6, 5 speed. How much would a 4.88 cost me? How much labor does it cost to do the front and back?

4.10's will be okay. You will probably notice some power loss, but it should still be okay.

Cost? 200 bucks for the gear set, 100 for the instal kit, and labor, which can vary. 200 is pretty common. You can do it for less. x2 since you need both front and rear done. So, 600 if you do the work yourself, or know a friend who can do it for you, to 1000 if you have a shop do it.

to find out what gears your toyota came with, you could just pull the codes from the door sticker. everything you need to find out how to do that can be done with a search either on here or on da' google.

Having had a 3.0 5speed 4runner, I'd suggest the 4.88's with 33's. I ran 4:10's with 32's but it wasn't very fun. It was obviously drivable but I would not recommend it for any length of time. With the 22RE, even with the reduced weight of the pick up over the 4runner, I'd still strongly suggest 4.88's with 33's.

I have 4.88's on my auto 3.0 4runner with 31's. It came stock that way. Honestly, I'd go 5.71's with 33's on this truck. Right now it doesn't flip flop that much from OD to 3rd, but it is on the edge of doing so. I fear with the 5.29's I'll have trouble holding OD.

Yeah I did, until I dropped in a 3.4, now I'm glad I have 5.29s. 5.29s with a 3.4 feels a lot like 5.71s with a 3.0. Both will bring a to your face.

I have a 93runner w/4.56's.

I have bogger 33's which are like 35's in any other brand Interco claims. Anyways, it is painful how little power I have and my bad clutch showed itself the second I put the tires on. I'm going with at least 5.29's. I would go lower so I could get bigger tires later but have heard that 5.71's break.
BTW: looking for 5.29's and a rear arb or other selectable.

the 90 4Runner 3.0/auto I parted had 4.10 gears

I bought 33" tires from a guy with a 22re/5 speed. It was gutless in his truck...mine has a v8.

Yeah, my engine shows no signs of giving it up so I dunno. I think maybe when I regear I'll just do 5.29's and 32's for however long. (finishing grad school) Then when the 3.4 comes I can upgrade to 33's. Some many options ideas, so little time and dough at the moment.

classicclark, have you found the info you need?

IMHO EWAYota and elripster got it right. 4.10's are doable, but it's gonna suck. BIG TIME If you have an auto, I would look at 5.71's if you spend much time on the highway and/or get "big" 33's.

BS. Why do the web wheelers say 5.71's are weak? "Because of the small pinion", right? Well, guess what - both 5.29 and 5.71 have 7 teeth on the pinion. The difference in size is minimal - there is only a certain range the size can be with a certain size ring gear and number of teeth. 4.88 will give you another tooth on the pinion and a significant increase in strength. The lower the gears, the more critical the setup, and most people just don't want to admit that they shouldn't be setting up these low gears themselves and blame the gears when they fail.

from wabfab.org:

"On Toyota 4x4s we recommend 4.88's for 33" tires and 5.29 for 35" and larger."
