rebuilt motor but no power....help wise ones

Ok. So here is the deal. I just rebuilt mt 94 3VZE motor from the bottom to the top. The motor runs great but has a serious lack of power. Our local mechanic has been through everything, fuel, ect. I have even replaced the ecu. It still gives me a code of 7-2 which Im taking is an ecu, and it takes like 15 second to accelerate from 40 to 50 mph. My mechanic said the left side exhaust temps were really high as well and said that as rpm increased the timing was not increasing like it normally should. We have only found limited answers to this riddle. The truck is eating a tank of gas in 150 to 200 miles and constantly feels like it is under load. Anyone have any wisdom to share??

Timing? Or the timing advance. Does it have a vacuum advance or some computer crap?

He said as the rpm increases the timing is supposed to, but isn't. Im not sure what it has but the truck is a bone stock 94 4runner.

just an thought, maybe you got the cam timing on one cam off an tooth, this would cause temps on one side to be higher than the other and very poor preformance

Sounds like a clogged catalytic converter to me... I am no mechanic .

Cats are already gone. That cam timing makes sense...hmm. Have you guys ever heard of an ignitor problem? The engine just seems under load. Even if Im going up a hill it wont accelerate and I am in North Florida!

mine felt that way with a bad knock sensor. If you rebuilt your engine im guessing it overheated on a head gasket blow...you may have to replace the knock sensor wire which usually melts during this.

the knock code will screw up the timing advance, it retards it cause it thinks the engine is pinging...this may cause the lack of power feel/

im not saying this is for sure it, but worth researching. it does seem strange your getting the code 72 and have replaced the ecu, cause that like the ac comp code otherwise.

symptoms sound knock sensor ish.

this makes me think knock sensor retard...maybe the advance in the distributer is screwy/ bad connect and so its throwing the ecu code, but not repairing when putting in new ecu.

The mechanic replaced the knock sensor as well. I am just out of options with this thing. Feels like it has a lawn mower engine in it lol! The distibutor works well because I can unbolt it and turn it and it advances the timing just fine.

When I replaced my t-belt a few months ago I was off a tooth on the crank pulley and it did the same axactthing you are describing. And when I would move the distributor it would have more or less power and the gas pedal was harder to push in. It also got crappy mileage. I would take the t-belt off and make shure all the marks are on. You gotta make sure you take off the lower cover also, to get it on the right crank tooth. That's why mine was off because I was lazy and didn't want to take the crank pulleys off. Hope this helps.

you know i been having the same problem i am starting to think its the ignitor my timing is all lined up, crank, cams. fuel system all cleaned out injectors replaced, my ignitor gets really hot i also replaced the coil, plugs,wires,cap,rotor. im not sure how to test a ignitor but maybe someone here knows. i checked everything!! sometimes i get the IGF code, well hopefully we get this worked out.......good luck let us know if you get if figured out and i will do the same....

It's either knock sensor or TPS is out of whack.

Does the pedal being stiff have anything to do with that? If so is there any quick way to diagnose if it is the tps?

Did you replace the timing belt tensioner? That was the fix for my 3.0 after rebuild,had no power under load

No I dont think the tensioner was replaced. Would that really have that kind of effect?

Do you have the spring or hydraulic tensioner? I've reused a hydraulic tensioner before, but replaced it when I rebuilt my engine 2 years ago.

mmm...yes TPS is worth a looky-lou...that is after you have all the fun checking all the timing marks. for a while I was looking into putting gromits on the t belt covers that I could remove to see the timing marks...it sucks to have to pull all that crap just to look at the timing marks.

if it makes you feel any better, i have to fix a hose on my water bypass for the second time this week...took off the plenum and put new clamps on two of the hoses, put it all back together and the third one split open at the clamp.

gotta love working on the old 3vze
