Rebuild or get crate motor?

Ok, I have a 92 P/U 4X4 with a 3.0 and a 5-speed. It has a tired old leaky engine. Would i be better off buying a 22R crate motor or something and swapping it or rebuilding my 3.0? I dont need more power so dont waste your time saying 3.4, 4.3, 350, 302 etc. Its not happening. More work than i want to do. If i go with anything other than a 3.0 it will be a 22R or 22RE. I perfer a 3.0 cause then i dont have to change anything else. I saw LCE had a remaned 3.0 long block for like 3k or so. Does anyone else have crate 3.0s? Or is it easier to just completely rebuild the one i have?

Swapping a 22RE in place of a 3.0 is quite a job. Might as well get another 3.0 if you don't want the 3.4.

Rebuild yours, BUT; go with MLS gaskets (they're pricey). Take it from someone who knows....(check sig link). www.engbldr.com is great for a rebuild kit & his customer service is excellent (email, don't call; it's hard to get them on the phone).

I purchased a used, but recently rebuild motor from someone on the forums. I spent about 1,800 when it was alll said and done.

Now I only have 30k on my yota.

But, FWIW I couldn't rebuild mine as I blew a hole in the block.

If you can find a crate motor for cheap, its a bit cheaper than rebuilding yourself, and less downtime.

Rebuilds take time, a simple swap don't take that long.

crates have warrenties, rebuilding yourself won't, not saying that if something goes wrong its your fault, but at least with a crate its covered.

If you're afraid of doing a 5VZE (3.4L) engine swap, or any of the other 'productive' engine swaps: 302, 305, 350, 3.8/4.3, etc. for that matter....
I have some news for you: going from the 3VZE to a 22r/re is the same, if not more involved, as doing any other engine swap.

I just did this with a crate engine. Would agree with 24 above. Crate engine gives you a warrantee and all new parts, and if not doing yourself costs about the same a s a rebuild...

i think im gonna stick with a 3.0. i dont want a extremely involved swap like new mounts, bellhousing, im sure id need a new computer and alot of other crap. i really want to stick to the 3.0. mine has 191k miles on it. has lasted 18 years so far. has all the power i need. it still runs great just has sprung a few leaks and stuff.

when you get a crate motor, did you guys replace your p/s pumps, alternators, distributors, and stuff like that too or just use your old ones? where did you get your crate motors from?
