Rear Window Cawthump!?!
I have a 88 4Runner. The rear window will go up and down all the way. But on the way down, when the window is about 6 or so inches open there will be a cawthup. Then the window will go the rest of the way down fine.
I've got the access panel open and I'm looking around. Can't see too much. Nothing seems to be loose or broken. ???
Any help would be appreciated.
Edit:
Something is binding in the mechenisim. I don't see where or what part but its binding. I'm still looking.

try puting down the tail gate and removing the cover. then have a friend roll the back window up and down while you look in there to try to see the problem

x2. When the thump happens, does it drop a little? If a gear is busted on the machanism, the whole mechanism needs to be replaced.
If its the motor with a rusted out gear tooth, see Matt16's final (sniff sniff) 4Runner write up.
I had to swap mine out. My sheared off tooth was right near the top of the window travel, it didn't have another tooth to grab, so it would stap about a quarter inch from the top.

Touched. My neighbor and a couple friends have 4Runners, I work on them from time to time, who knows, there might be more, my buddy with a 1989 4Runner has a Mercedes Benz OM617 5cyl diesel that he leaves together in the garage at night... maybe if he leaves out a bottle of champagne and some Barry White...

something is bent, which is making something else bind..then you hear the cawthump whenever that "binding" part isn't binding anymore.
atleast that's what's happening in my head lol.

Yeah, I think so too. I just have to find the bent/bind. I have no idea how something could have bent inside the door.
hummmm? there's often a cawthump binding sound going on my head too. LOL

Spray down the coiled spring with WD40. I think the spring just gets old and squeeky, and when it hits a certain tension it just makes a ca-chunk sound. I had the same problem on a the 4runner I just bought and the WD40 spray seemed to take care of the problem.
I also put a little grease on the gears and sprayed a little graphite lube in the key hole and let me tell you, the window now works like new!! Let me know how it works out for ya.

sounds like the lock mechanism...
The tailgate will only unlock if the window is down, and automatically locks when the window is rolled up...
Try rolling the window down and back up. Then roll it down and open the tailgate then close it and roll it back up again and see if it only does it then...

there is a trick to opening the window with the tailgate down. there should be a slot on each side of the gate that open and close over the latch on the sides of the truck. you can get a pen or something and push it into those latches in the gate and they will close tricking the mechanism into thinking the gate is up.

i had a similar problem on my '88. Finally figured out i had installed a license plate bolt that was too long and it was just the right length to catch slightly on the rail that holds the glass as i rolled it down.
