Try and use the key in the back door to roll it all the way down. Once it is "down" (or at least w/e it is, is down to have it think it is down.) reach in, on the inside of the tailgate, pull up the lock, then open it with the handle on the inside.
When i first got mine it took me a while to figure it out. I later, after doing all that, just startin pulling like h*ll and got the door to come down.

Window still isnt fixed though. I roll it down while holding window up, then when it is all the way down, i push window all the way down, open door or w/e, then window rolls up fine.

If it gets off track or screws up though, you may have to open tailgate and see if you can see the problem.

All this assuming your setup is the same as mine. I have a 95 4Runner and you didnt say what you had.

Relay problem OR.... the window motor crapped out. Mine did. It happens more often than Toyota should allow!

No kidding, to heck with a 3.0 headgasket special service campaign, I want a rear window SSC.

I did a rear-window-fix/ diagnose writeup a while back. It was mostly aimed at "slow" rear windows, but there's lots of information that you might draw from.

Use silicone lube on the rubber runners inside the tailgate. The water from mud is probably acting as a lubricant. Did wonders for my back window.

you and me both.

i never washed my 86..never,
my friends g.f. washed it once, and it survived..but the only time i washed it, i ended up w/3-4 quarts of fuel in the oil...

i thought i lost it, i just drove home, washed it, and it wouldn't start...replaced fuel pump, and never happened again (both, breaking, and washing)

now, the 86 is up for sale, as i got the 88 fixed.. (HG now done)

but, windows, if the motor works, you must ensure the guides are clean, and the seals are not putting too much force on the glass (old rubber can act like a vice)
like others, lube the rails and gears to your wallets content, but also make sure you have enough room for that window to actually fit...

i know this, due to my 1st toyota...(roll up windows). i almost broke the handle off, and ended up cuttin my fingers on the door speakers, until i bought a new (80 dollar) window seal...i should/ve just razored it to fit...(or dremeled).
after i installed the new seal, it rolled up/down like it was made from silk

hope that helps
