rear tailgate regulator spring
Quick question guys.
Trying to put my tailgate back together.
Is the regulator spring under the most tension when the glass is up or down?
thanks

I'd say up, but it's been a long time since I've messed with either of my 4rnr gates.
What stage of the project are you at that you are messing with the spring, anyway? Did you take the regulator apart or something? As I recall, the regulator needs to be at the midway point of the glass sliding up and down the put it back in.

Mathew, thanks and you were right. Up is best.
I'm now at the finished stage.
I ended up taking the regulator out, removing the motor and then it was easy to get the spring on.
I also learned the hard way it's important to mark how the regulator gears mesh.
I had to swap tailgates as mine was rusted out.
The original tailgate had the swing away tire while the donor did not.

Nice....hehehe. Really wasn't sure on that. Glad you fixed it, though.
On my '86, I've crunched the gate in three times. Twice was enough to warrant pulling everything out to knock the metal back out. Had a bumb hitch on my trailer that kept popping off no matter how many times I tried fixing it. That is until I put a "Bulldog" hitch on. First time I busted the factory glass out. But, that's because I backed into the trailer with the tongue sticking up in the air. What a day that was.
