rear pumpkin install. stuck partway
I bought a used pumpkin from a 2nd gen 4runner. 4.56 gears. I am currently trying to install into my friends 88 4runner.
I've done this a couple times before w/ not problems.I did the same thing to my 89 4runner.
This time, when everything went back together, the passenger axle isn't going in all the way. There's about a 1/4 inch of space between the backing plate and the axle. It feels like it's hitting something in the diff. axle is engaged w/ the gears and working, just seems like a large gap.
Drivers side went back in w/ no problem.
Any suggestions? I'm going to try tightening down the bolts to see if everything pulls together easily, but it seems like there's more of a gap then there should be.
cheers.

I dunno buddy, the other side's going in fine?
try pulling the axle shaft back out of engagment from the spider and turn it a little and try to slide it back in? I dunno... that's stange...
same old axle shafts, backing plates, and rear wheel bearings?

I didn't see a locker. Gears should be stock toyota gears, but I didn't look that close.
I tightened the backing plate up and the gap closed up fine.
Looks like everything is good. I'll post to confirm everything's still good after a fluid fill and a test drive.
Thanks for reads and replies!

the splines are just binding up, push it in as far as you can then thread the nuts on the back of the backing plate studs and tighten them a little at a time to pull it in straight. tell your buddy that he might have a bent axle housing if its getting stuck that bad, but if he hasn't noticed weird tire wear or vibration on that side its probably fine, my taco axles get stuck like that every once in a while.

It's usually nice to have a friend fiddle with the flange while you're stabbing the shafts. Shouldn't be too hard, might want to check out the bearings and see if the shaft is bent.
