Hi Guys

ive got a slight leak in my read diff, the leak is sorted with a lil weldin but i dont know how long it was leaking for so i want to throw some new oil in there? is it a simple case of filler plug and drain plug??? and if so, what oil are you guys using in your diffs???

anything to watch out for??

just make sure you can get the fill plug off first then remove the drain ... fill it back up tell it starts to come out of the fill plug either 75w90 or 80w90 should work just fine

For diffs, make sure the oil has the 'GL-5' rating. GL-4 is preferred for transmissions but NOT diffs.

to change the oil what you can do to get all the gear oil is out is loosen the bolts that hold the third member on only the ones on the bottom but like said make sure you can get the fill bolt out and drain everything out. i know when i wanted to change mine i couldnt buge the drain plug but the fill bolt was a snap to take out

Make sure to undo the filler bolt FIRST. This way- if it will not come off, you can drive to a mechanic to have them remove it. If you drain first, you're screwed.

If you can wait a few hours, spray some liquid wrench/WD40/pentrating lubricant on the fill/drian plugs just to be sure; i just went ahead an sprayed em up yesterday and will be doing the same today; GL-5 Rated 75-90, 2.6qt if im not mistaken (but obviously, just fill to the rim of the fill bolt when parked level)

while you're at it, take a moment to add a piece of hose to the vent plug and run it up into the undercarriage (or higher) so you dont get any other liquids in it...mine has water apparently...

I think I'm going to be changing the front and rear diff. oil on my 92 Runner soon. Does anyone know FOR SURE what size sockets are needed? I Don't have sockets past 19MM, so I need to go buy a couple.

24mm on the rear if it is the hex head type, I think the IFS fronts are the same size. Be sure to use a 6-sided socket, not the 12 point style, less likely to strip the plug.

o yea f that hex head man i soaked that thing for 2days the head is soo messed up im gonna have to weld a nut to it

Alrighty, well the rear diff is draining as we speak. The oil is dark grey, almost black. I went out and bought a 24MM Socket and a 17" breaker bar, and sprayed it with some PB Blaster. For the record, I'm going with semi-synthetic 75-W90.

I noticed though when I removed the filler plug that oil came out more than I expected?? Was it overfull? I guess I can just fill it up, then park facing the opposite direction to top it up.

I'll say it too. Make sure you can get the filler plug out first!

I almost found that out the hard way.

Ended up having to get a friend to weld something to the plug to get it out. Never seen anything so stuck.

while your under the rear diff take the diff breather off and give it a once over with some brake cleaner

Can you mount a Filter on the diff or something like this...what you guys think?
Or mount this filter on the diff itself. I need to change my fluids..

Myron nice PU, Arizona = no rust dang, mine grew up in NE. Need I say more, (gear oil). Had to add that to stay on topic.
