Rear Axle Strength/Swap

Rear Axle Strength/Swap
I am putting a Small Block Chevy in my 94 toyota 2wd pickup...
how strong are the factory rears?
are other gearsets available? 3.55, 3.73, etc?
I am considering swapping in a 98+ ford ranger 8.8" rear axle because i know its strong, has lots of aftermarket support, and i believe it is exactly the same width (WMS TO WMS)
I have seen my rear measured anywhere from 58, 58.5, or 59 inches WMS TO WMS. Can anyone verifiy this?
I believe the ranger rear is 59" WMS TO WMS, can anyone verify that?
I am welding in a 4 link, so spring perches are not important.
also, will the pinion offset of the ranger be similar enough to the toyota?
Thanks so much guys....

I would say your width is 58.5", but that's based off 4WD experience YMMV with 2WD...

also, your 2WD diff is likely the weaker 7.5" version, so you might run into some durability issues if its a built SBC (which being that you're doing a 4link in the rear, I would assume you're making a drag truck). Other gearsets are available as it is basically the same diff as used in the Celica, etc.
