Rattling sound from the tranny

When I am driving normal under a load it is ok but when I slow down it has a bad rattling coming from the tranny area. Anyone ever heard this before?

I get the same thing.....as I let off the throttle slightly at higher speeds there is a buzzing rattle from the drivetrain. This happens in 2WD and I have a V6 Auto 1st gen.

My 93 2WD does it too.

I think it is caused by fore and aft play in the transmission. At some point, (hopefully before my trans blows up) I'm going to get a W58 trans to replace it and I'll take my W56 apart to see what is actually the problem

Mine is a 22re 5speed 4runner, mine does this same thing when I let off the throttle. It sounds like the whole thing is going to fall apart. It didn't do it before I swapped out my busted transmission for the nice new one. There used to be a nice little bracket holding the exhaust to the bell housing that I neglected to put back. So I think is just the exhaust rattling against the bell housing.

Im gonna look there as it really does sound like a buzzy exhaust touching metal noise. I also know my exhaust was replaced entirely so that mightbe gone if you had a pick of where that bracket goes thatd be great! Thanks its been worrying me.

Is it possible that it may be the heat shield on the cat?

mine makes a similar sound but it goes away if i bairly touch the clutch peddle which makes me believe that it is the throwout bearing.

It's highly possible with the 5 speed that it's failing. Mine started with bearing whine in all but 4th then progressed to an almost heatshield/skid plate rattling sound and the loss of 4th gear. It's amazingly loud (people look at me from the sidewalks and when I'm on the phone people on the other end ask me what's going on in the background). I'll be swapping it out Sat so I'll post up if I find anything else that might cause it.

While we're talking about tranny sounds, does anyone get a humming vibration @ 30mph? I've been noticing this from somewhere towards the front of the center console, but can't pinpoint exactly where. Doesn't matter is I'm accelerating or decelerating as soon as I hit 30phh it does it. Its an auto.

Thanks!

Ok well I was wrong Come to find out it was only a bolt on the cat that was loose and made a very loud rattling noise. Luckily the throwout bearing is good for now
