Randomly stuttering engine, backfires

Hi,

I have a problem with my 1986 4runner (Australia) with the 4Y Engine (Carby, 4cyl, petrol, 5 gear manual)

The problems occurs on some days only, but I think only in high gear - not sure about that. The engine stutters for about half a second, loses all acceleration but then runs smooth after that. I also got backfires sometimes, especially when shifting back and using the engine brake.
Its not really affecting the driving, but I want a reliable car. I also experienced a loss of power in the last days (just my feeling, might be just in my mind). It feels like I have low power in the lower revs (thats normal, I know...but it got worse in the last days) and then when accelerating it suddenly kicks in.
I also noticed the following: When I park the car and turn of the engine, it makes a sound like "gluc-gluc-gluc", like a liquid is flowing. Is it normal that it makes a sizzling noise when I unscrew the fuel cap?

I suspect the carby, it got adjusted by a mechanic 3 months ago...might be something about the fuel supply? Fuel pump is brand new.

Hope you have an idea!

Have you figured out the problem yet? I have a problem with my 22re backfiring at idle but I do have an exhaust leak that might be the source of the problem. And the sizzling you hear when opening you fuel cap is just the pressure escaping your fuel system.

I'm not familiar with the 4Y, but here's a suggestion

I'd put my money on an "auxiliary accelerator pump" or your carburetor's version of it

Also correctly set timing is a biggie. Too retarded can cause backfires.
And possibly intermittent spark or misfire

I had a slight stumble problem at highway speed with my '88 4Runner/22RE motor. The EGR valve was partially clogged with black, oily goop. Cleaned it. Problem solved.

The noise when removing the fuel cap is just pressure in the tank being released. Normal.
