radiator heating up issues

Ok, I tried to search but could not find much of anything related.

I replaced the radiator about 3 weeks ago, new hoses and thermostat. Before that I always had to move the thermostat in the cab over to hot for the truck to heat up to normal operating temp. My radiator then began to leak and thus I figured a new radiator, thermostat would fix it right up. But no luck, still runs cold until I move the thermostat to hot, once it has heated to running temp I can place it back to cold or leave it at hot it does not matter and it runs just fine.

Also while running cold it seems to run very rough, not all the time but mainly from 1st to 2nd gear and occasionally 2nd to 3rd.

I have a 94 x-cab with the 3VZE.

Anyone have anything similar to this and what did you do to fix it?

Sounds like you're not getting all the air out of the cooling system when you fill it.

Park on a hill with the front on the high side, start engine cold with radiator cap off, and fill slowly, allowing it to "burp" until it won't take any more.

if heated coolant isn't getting to the upper part of the system (throttle body), it won't tell the sensor that the engine is warm & doesn't run correctly.

Take your thermostat and look for the little by-pass hole. Remove the little plug and drill the hole out to 1/4"; this reduces heat up and temperature over-shoot in the engine / radiator. I have done this for years in my truck, street rods and customs.

3vz's don't suffer from the 22r/22re temp overshoot I thought.

I will give this a go first, and report back with results!

I have small and big block chevy motors in my street rods, a Nailhead Buick in my Merc Custom and I know alot of other street rodders whom did this mod and it solved an overtemperature problem on startup.

Well I think the problem is solved...Friday on the way to work I noticed my radiator leaking again. After looking close the clamp came loose for the lower hose. I tightened her back up and threw some more antifreeze in there. Thinking it should be good to go for winter now
