questions about 3.4 swap - what did it cost you? (and more)

I know this has been beaten to death... but I didn't find the threads I remember seeing when I searched.

A buddy of mine just rolled his truck and has offered me his 3.4 with ECU and wire harnesses and whatever else. I have to pay to ship it across the country but otherwise it's all mine.

Looking at the list of parts on the ORS site, it seems a little daunting asking him to pull all that crap off his wreck, and it seems like buying all the little things separately would break the bank. Not to mention the kit is almost two grand alone.

His engine has about 300,000km on it, so it'll probably need a rebuild, and I'll likely pay $400 to get it shipped here (along with his ARB).

Is it worth doing this? I wasn't planning to do a 3.4 swap for a long long time, if ever, so this engine would likely sit in the garage for a year or two until the finances catch up (if they ever do).

Do you really need to buy the kit? Seems like the wire harness is a good purchase but is everything else -really- needed?

Thanks for any opinions,

Isaac

I haven't done the final tally yet, but my total will be around $2000 or less after I factor in the sale of my 3.0 and related parts. I splurged on some headers and changed out the timing belt, new plugs and wires... etc. You may not need to do all that.

But, it sounds like you are getting your engine and harness for "free", so that's a big savings. I paid $1100 or so for my motor and related. Even at $400 for shipping, you're $700 ahead of most of us.

I couldn't justify the ORS harness and related due to cost. Check out my thread. I did my own wiring and it really wasn't that bad. The fuel line from the 3.4 can be used on the 3.0 and I went another way with my power steering lines. When I was done, I didn't have to by any special parts or a kit.

If you haven't already, you should check out the entire YT 3.4 swap section. There is a ton of info in there that helped me. In fact, I wouldn't have even considered the swap and wiring without YT to do research and back me up.

You'll love that 3.4. The power is incredible. Definitely worth the time and money to do. I'll never drive a 3.0 equipped truck again if I can help it. I'd do another swap in a heartbeat.

yikes. i emailed a trucking company and they quoted me $1500 to ship the ARB and engine across the country. might be cheaper to just buy one locally.. i'll definitely still grab the ARB though. haha
