Question about my dad's 94 toy's battery light and brake light staying on??
My dad has a 94 toyota pickup, 22re, 5 speed and his battery light and brake light keep coming on and off. I was driving it today and the lights stayed on but when i went over some railroad tracks they came off. i remember reading about this but can't exactly recall what might be the problem. he had the alternator rebuilt (brushes, etc..) buy our mechanic at toyota a month ago so I am really not sure what the deal is. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks ya'll!!!

for the brake light could be low on fulid or the e-brake handle is comeing out just a little bit and trips the light mine did it all the time had to push it in

Oh and a "rebuilt" unit is ok but I would go pickup one out of a 7m-gte with an auto tranny, they are 90amp units. I had to "make" a bracket extension for the front adjuster bolt but overall very easy and well worth it.

Jumped the gun, if you had a mechanic do it go back and make sure it's right. Sounds like your ace mechanic did somthing wrong in connecting it or it's just bad timming and the voltage pack on it is on the way out.

well, it was doing it before our mechanic did it so I KNOW that is not the case. can an alternator go out even if the brushes have been replaced? the truck only has 122,xxx on it.

it's not all about brushes, if a winding in the alternater has over heated and melted it could stil be working enough to keep you running but not fully charging the battery. Or like I said the voltage regulator pack could also be on the way out.

ok, well i appreciate it. i read my dad your posts and he is going to be looking for a reman one this weekend. we will see what the deal is. the voltage regulator pack, can that be fixed? i am sorry for the newb questions but alternators are not my specialty. thanks

The voltage reulator cannot be "fixed", though you may be able to get it from the dealer. I can check my EPC when I get outta this hell hole called the library. I doubt its the regulator, sounds like a burnt winding so it's time for a whole new unit.

Dont waste the money on just the voltage regulator, you never know if something else is waiting to fail. Spend the money at the dealer and get a quality reman unit. Thats my 2 cents.

First of all, clean and tighten your battery cables.
Secondly, Charge+Brake is designed to indicate a problem with the charging system.
Thirdly, rebuilds seem notoriously poor for these rigs, especially from Checkers/Shucks/Kragen. Napa rebuilds seem to last better.

Also, make sure all the connections to the alternator are good. My alternator went out and I replaced it. But the plug on the alternator wasn't seated correctly and it stranded me in the middle of traffic.

well, i got one for my dad at napa for 146.00 with the lifetime warranty. he is putting it on right now as I type. i will keep you all posted if anything changes.

well, my dad put the reman one one and charged up his battery before he started it to make sure it had a good charge. the only thing he had trouble with was getting it out. he has pretty big forearms so he had to take the lower radiator hose off to get it out. he hooked everything back up and all is good to go so far. thanks for all of the help.
