Question about 88 4wd rear wheel/axle gasket and bearings

I have a leak in rear hub of 88 4wd.I am planning to replace gasket and possibly bearings while I'm at it.Would it be a good idea or necessary to change bearings?Can I replace gasket myself?Can I replace bearings myself?How long do these bearings typically last or wear?Would the axle of this truck tend to be worn or need replaced?Any tips or cautions about this procedure?
