A little bit as in the next feeler gauge up/down won't cause it to not run.
The engine type and what you have done to it will help people give you better answers.

I don't remember exactly, I just did it by mistake when I rebuilt my engine.
You could try the tdc stroke that has you distributor 180deg out then remove it, turn it 180deg and reinstall. If it is already installed correctly and the problem is something else then it won't start even if the other problem is fixed.
In my sig there is a link to factory service manuals. It should tell you what stroke it should be on and how to install it.

I just did it. You have to crank to TDC on the compression stroke. The manual said to put your finger over the open spark plug hole of the first cylinder and feel for pressure as you turn the crank to the mark on the pulley. I had a pressure guage so I used that. It's pretty obvious when there is and isn't pressure.
Then install the distributor with the cap pointed to the #1 cylinder, or the upper left hand spark plug wire port.
