Problem starting: 1994 4Runner 3.0

Hi all. Got a problem with my 1994 4Runner 3.0 SR5 that I'm just unable to figure out. Whenever I try and start the car, if it wants to start at all it will stay below 100rpms and just sort of sputter and stall out. After about 15 minutes or so it will usually crank up and sound just fine. We've replaced the fuel pressure regulator which had gone bad and just today replaced the air intake tube which had a crack in it. After replacing both these parts, the car fired right up and seemed okay, but once it was turned off and later attempts were made the prior problem would persist. This was how the problem started. As of the last week, whenever going down the road, if I come to a complete stop or am about to come to one and I start to accelerate, the car wants feels like it wants to stall out before it accelerates. That pretty much summarizes the problem as of now. We believe it's something to do with the fuel system. Usually whenever I have the trouble just trying to get it to start, you can smell fumes of gas from the engine compartment very briefly. I'd appreciate any help I could get on this. Only have about average knowledge of cars and I'm just completely stumped as are most of my family. Thanks for you time.

Small update:

The 4Runner seems to start just fine when its been sitting and completely cooled off. Has done so earlier today and yesterday. Drove it out to our mechanic and the whole way there I had problems with it wanting to sputter and lose rpms. About a half-mile from the house it also started to rev up about 500rpms (from 2500 to 3000 then from 1500 to 2000rpms) while I kept a constant pressure on the accelerator or just tried to cruise.

Once at the shop, I turned it off and then fired it right back up, no problem. I know the problem is still there, just seems odd how one minute that particular problem is there and then the next it isn't.
