Problem indentifying tranny

Hey guys I have a 1986 toyota 4x4 5 speed. My transmission went out a few days ago and I'm positive it's the transmission but I'm having a hard time figuring out which transmission it is and what year of the trucks I can pull a used one from.. Thanks!

If your truck is carbureted you have a G54, if you're EFI, you'll have a W56. One can be used in the place of the other but the G series uses a forward shift case and most W56's use a top shift. A top shift can be used behind a forward shift trans but not the other way around and will come through the floor in a slightly different location.

Basically, find a trans out of a 4 cylinder 84-88 truck with the same drive-train (Carbed or EFI) you already have for the least headache.

Go to Marlincrawler.com They have a pretty accurate transmission identification chart.

They Make a G,W, and R series trans for that year truck,
G - 8 bolts in the shifter plate
W - 6 bolts in the shifter plate
R - is the 22RETurbo engine

Hopes that helps you some

As long as it's not a turbo 22re you should have the W56B transmission. Call a dealership with your VIN and they can confirm it for you. Be careful when searching for a replacement.....there are 5 different W56s.

Alright and I now have another problem.. I think at one point or time the 22r motor in my truck was infact a 22re motor. So is there any other way to tell in case someone has did a complete motor an tranny swap ?

The best way to find out is to get the number of the engine block and transmission. Then call the dealership with your VIN and compare.

All those ideas are great; however, what do you do when you have a transplanted Toyota transmission? Where are the casting points or stamps on the case? I beleive that I have a R150F transmission but not sure of the year, mechanical vs. electronic speedometer cables.
