Power Steering Pulley

Did a search, only found advice for removing it.

I just need to adjust it. Trying to tighten a belt. I can't steer! I loosened the bolt in the slot that looks like it should allow the power steering pulley to move but I think I must have to loosen something else too, cuz it ain't movin'.

What am I missing.

Thanks.

that pulley in front, has a bolt through the center of the pulley, and a bolt that comes down from about 11:00 position. once you loosen the bolt through the center of the pulley, turn the other bolt clockwise to increase tension on the belt. once tension is correct, tighten the bolt through the center of the pulley.

The center bolt... that's self explanatory..

anyone have a diagram or picture to show the other bolt in question? Just so I'm not cranking on the wrong thing.

I've also heard loosening that center bolt can be tough.. tips? Someone mentioned a chain wrench but I don't have on of those.

Where the arrow is that's the bolt that releases tension on the belt. To loosen the nut on the pulley I use two wrenches locked together, works like a champ. Use a socket and deep socket on the smaller bolt, IIRC it's 12 mm and I think the pulley 14 mm...

He has a V6 guys, not the 4cyl

Two things need to be loosened to adjust the V6 PS setup. First one is the bolt that says 58 (590, 43) that is the pivot bolt. The tension bolt says 39 (400, 29)

Loosen those two bolts, and adjust the tightness on the belt, then tighten the tension bolt. Once that is tight, tighten the pivot bolt and you are good to go.

Yes, they are a PITA since they are behind the pulley and behind the pump, but with the right tools its fairly simple.

PITA is right, I had to R&R that belt on the side of the road once to replace the alterator belt. I still have scars on my arm from that little job.

Excellent. I removed the battery yesterday and loosened up 39. I did not, however, loosen 58. I will try again today. Thanks guys!

Hey guys. It was hard as hell but I finally broke free that number 58 bolt.

Anyways I can pivot the PS assembly and no position makes the belt tight enough.

New belt time? I'm assuming so. I even took the old one off already. I guess I didn't really know belts could loosen over time but I'm too surprised either I guess.

What size V belt do I need? Anyone know? I even remember reading someone suggesting going one size smaller than OEM but I don't know what OEM size is.

Thanks again for the pointers.

Never heard of getting a smaller one, the OEM worked fine for me. Sounds like a good time to replace them all because the outside belt or belts have to come off to replace the inside belt or belts.

Picked up a belt at the Toyota dealership. My other belt was definitely stretched out. It came off fairly easily. I'm having trouble getting this one back on. Replacing them all might be a good idea but I've got other places on this truck that need the money more.

Well crap, I was hoping you had the 4cyl and damaged the pulley assembly b/c I have a spare to unload. Actually glad to hear you got it figured out though.

Sorry Jason. I miss my 22RE Toyota though... I don't really see any performance gains have a 6 cyl. But check this out... I got pulled over for not having registered this truck yet. It cost me $204 to transfer title and get plates. My god! $204. I figure spending that much on it I may as well fix its quirks too. I got the belt having a friend push down on the PS reservoir while I finagled the belt on. Then had him push it up while I tightened back down. Thanks everyone.

Power Steering - check.

To go yet...
Cat back exhaust including muffler
Right tail light cover
figure out Cruise Control. (Cruise turns on according to dash light but unable to set cruise while driving)
